Do you have to dig the 3ft deep x6ft dia hole every year? Jeff

It depends on what the grower wants to do. I've heard of growers who go 5' by 5' and some who only go 12 inches down. Just remember that the roots will grow as far as there is well drained soil.

I have dug my patch pretty deep, this is because I have raised beds, which are only aboit 800 square feet, so I will allow the roots to grow down instead of out. My vines will be growing out on the grass where I will bury them, so the main root system will have around 800 cubic feet per plant for four plants, plus the tap roots growing from the vine. Tom

For the past couple of seasons I have dug 5'X 5'X 4' "Planting holes". Only because I had Hard pan, unproductive, crumby, washed out, DIRT to start with.
Till in lots of manure, and leafe mould, in 800 sq ft or more of sunny space and you will suceed.
PS add a proven seed to your green house... :}
