For those of you who grow two plants back to back. Assuming you are training them in opposite directions, how much space do you leave between them?

Yo Brent,
About 3' should do it...the roots will use the same ground around that area...makes it easier to water and feed.

Geneva plants 'back to back'. She leaves four feet in between the plants.

I thought that planting 2 plants in the same hill was taboo.

I double plant back-to-back four feet apart!! That allows me to place eight plants in my 8000+ sq.ft. with only four hoop houses.

Does that mean that the main root takes up about 4 ft of space or would it spread further on the side away from the other plant?

At 4 feet apart the roots are mixing. It must be OK if the WR was grom that way.

How far do the roots spread? The roots spread wherever there are leaves. I have observed that roots from the main
root ball spread at least 12 ft. from the original stem!!!
That's a root ball 24 ft. in diameter!

How far in from the edge of the patch do you make your hills?

The plants have nearly 20 feet on each side. Hoop houses(4) are about 16'X 18'. Patch is now about 82'wide by 110'long

If I get it right that means you grow'em 25ft long x40ft wide.Do you happen to know what size Mrs.Emmons grows her plants Stan?

Yes....about 1000 sq.ft. per plant. Seems to me that Geneva uses about 800 to 1000 sq.ft. per plant. I haven't measured her growing areas....she has several. Some are used for "testing" last years seed for potential.
