Are these the dates you plan on starting your seed's or the day that you are going to plant your starts in the ground??
Weather permiting I am going to direct start my seeds on the 27th of March (full moon) But with only 53 days till that date it's got to warm up alot before that so I can get the ground prepped and heated. I think I will also start seed's inside as back up and compare the results of inside starting and direct start methods. The inside starts would be planted 1 month after, (On the next full moon)If they are keeping up with the direct start plants. <;-) H-K-J

New moon to the first quarter: plant above-ground crops such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, lettuce and spinach.
From the first quarter to the full moon: plant above-ground crops such as beans, melons, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers.
From the full moon to the last quarter: plant tubers and root crops such as beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, garlic and onions as well as strawberries and grapes.
From the last quarter to the full moon: avoid planting anything.

Since my largest pumpkin went down one week before the GPC, I'm going to plant a few days later this year.

I will plant my seeds about May 3. For those who are thinking of planting before Mid April, I suggest you reconsider. The records show most of the Worlds 1000+ pound fruit were from seeds started the last week of April and the first week of May.

I would have to agree with Len. I Know I've tried it twice no real advantage Just harder to protect a plant from the cold and frost. I know all you newer growers want to get started. We all want it to be Growing it's like waiting for x-mas when you are a kid. Best of luck this year Mark..P

I am debating over a time period between April 20, and May 10. It may depend on how much It have to do with school, what pollinatiors I want to use, ect. Toug decision! What will the weather do? Will they get a slow start because of low spring temps? What is the extended spring forcast? Man, lots of decisions to make before go time. Tom Beachy

To Chris: Starting you plants a month before transplanting is way too long. The plants should have runners in a month and will be severely rootbound. Suggest no more than 2 weeks from germination to transplant.

My start date is totally controlled by the spring weather. Before last year it was my belief that you needed to get them in as early in May as possible, but a very wet spring prevented me from planting until late in May. The plants quickly caught up to previous years and I set my first pumpkin in early July - which ended up as my personal best @ 514lbs. So don't jump the gun and start germinating unless the weather and ground conditions are good. As Len pointed out, you don't want your transplants to get any older than 2 weeks - I like to transplant even quicker than that.

In the south I believe earlier is better due to their extreme heat in the summer. But for those of us up north ponder this. When I lost my plants last year I put one of my squash seeds in the ground to see what kind of plant it would be. I planted it around Mid-August I believe & it grew at twice the rate that any plant I've ever had before that I planted May 1st. Now I don't think my seed is twice as good, I think that because it didn't have to fight cool nights & shorter days it caught right up. Knowing this I believe it is only "chancing" your seed by starting to early. I know it is hard to resist, but your patience will be rewarded.........Paul

The theme that seems to be reocurring is that the best time to begin germination depends on where one lives. Here's what I do....I ask Geneva when she starts!!!
