I said in my grower diary that I would have a mister and soaker hoses. We just learned, after several breaks and leaks in our pipes, that the builders that built our house used bad copper for the pipes. We are going to be having all of our pipes replaced so I may or may not have misters or a soaker hose. But hopefully by july-august when it gets really hot I will have them working. Tom

sorry to hear of your bad luck. so are you going to be out of your house completely while they redo the pipes ? maybe you could find a nice neighboor who'd let you run a hose over to your patch. hope it all works out for you. gordon

I wouldn't think it would take until August to replace your plumbing.

That is a bummer. With that 846 Calai, do whatever it takes to get water to your patch. For me that entales a 600 foot long garden hose! FYI, that much hose is not extremely expensive, I fot 4-150 ft long hoses for 80 dollars, plus, I'm sure you have several hoses laying around like most families, if you dont, ask neighbors to let you borrow some for a few months. Thanks everyone for your responses. They will be "just" tearing out the walls and replacing pipes. I'm going to ask if they can do the one to the hose first. Tom, I have 2 200' saokers from last year which I couldn't use because the pipe was broken. I will save the 846 for next year when I have a slight idea as to what I'm doing. If all goes well I might pollenate it with an 865 Mettler (946 Geerts X 567 Mombert). I hope you all have better luck than I do. Thanks, Tom

Hope your folks had insurance! I hate those modern "Sweat" copper fittings.... Gee Tom with all the advice you give to all the AG sites, as well as the elaborite misting/watering systems you use in your patch, what do you feel the limiting factor was on your largest pumpkin last year the "Tom 30#"???? I hope you do better with the Mettler and Calai seed you have! Actually Farmertom you shoul probably send those back to whoever traded you for them.............

Gads,
You must remember that his pumpkin weighed "heavy" over the charts!

Howdy, You got that right Kilr, 27.6% heavy. lol. I didn't have a mister/soaker this year because the hose was broken. I don't have a Mettler seed, but depending on how a trade goes I might get an 865. I think the limiting factor was my lack of experience and thinking that it was all in the seed. I read pumpkins 2 and I'm about half way through the rodale book of composting and have learned that it's "all in the soil." Hopfully I will be prepared for this year and next, as that will be when I grow the 846 and maybe the 865, and possibly make a cross between the two which may be interesting. I hope you all do very well this year. Tom

Tom, You should be fine, you got 6 months until misting time & I'm sure the plumbers are not going to keep your family troubled that long. You can always set up everything for your misters ahead of time(I set mine up before planting so I'm not walking all over the patch after I plant) then when the plumbers are done all you have to do is hook up the garden hose. And if a broken hose hurt you last year, I would have sent a connector to repair it. at about 10 cents apiece it's money well spent..........Paul

I've never heard of bad copper pipes although my brother once bought his fittings at the bargain barn. Turns out the fittings were a bit thinner than standard. His kept springing leaks also. Yep sometimes a "bargain" really sucks.

Copper pipe come in 3 grades (M,L,K). In general, except for occasional flaws, all are good. It's when you mix copper with other pipe, (galvanized, carbon steel) that an electro-chemical process will occur that will cause corrosion. This can be corrected by using a di-electric union, which keeps copper from touching the other piping. Also, any kind of pipe that is subjected to freezing, without water being drained from it, will split or burst.

Howdy! The hose pipe was fixed, so the misters and soakers will be ready for the plants. Thanks for the pipe info, kilr, if there are any aspiring plumbers here e-mail kilr. lol. Thanks everyone, Tom
