Hi everybody,
I've been reading all day & have been expecting things to explode. BOOM !!
There nows it's done. How about this, I'll post a question to get things back on track & give you something "pumpkin" to ponder.
What are you growing this year & what crosses do you hope to make? Here's mine
900.8 Lyons, Andrews 455, Vanlderstine 862 & Huffer 353
the crosses I want are 900 x 455,455 x 900, 900 x sibb, 862 x 353,
353 x self & 353 x sibb.
Feel free to jump in and tell me your crosses & what your hoping for ( green or orange) I want green & a good cross for my hungarian squash........Paul

I am going to try Geneva's 1262, I know records have yet to grow records, but you can't help but have this one in your garden. at least for a pollinator

Paul,
What differences, if any, do you think will be between your 353 x self and the 353 x sibbed?.Tom

Calai 846, Mombert 867 and Mombert 940 (Christensen 847 as a backup in case one doesn't germinate).
846 x 867
940 x 867
867 x 846
I want the size of the 846 and 940 with the color of the 867. The only green I want is on the leaves and vines.

I plan to grow the 945 VanIderstine, 845 Nesbitt, and the 1262 Emmons. Not 100% on the cross yet, im still to new. Any sugestions would be appreciated. Here is what im thinking.......

945 x 1262
1262 x 945
845 x 735 Pukos (mother in-law is growing)

the 896 wells and the 865.5 Nesbitt are being considered for back ups, or if I can talk the farmer across the street into renting me some land, ill grow one of these to.

I'm leaning towards the 845 Bobier and 1049 Holland. Definitely the Bobier and probably the Holland because the two are not closely related. With only two plants I don't have to tell what the crosses will be.

Tom, I'm going to self the 353 for a future cross. I've boughten into the "hybrid vigor "theory , you see the 353 was a selfed 628 hungarian, which was a selfed hungarian of a weight & parentage I've yet to find out ( but hopefully in the next 6 weeks I will). That will make the offspring selfed 3 generations back.
I almost positive I've got some seed coming from a grower whos seed is selfed 3 generations back as well & completely different from mine. By crossing the two I'm hoping the seed from the offspring will have the vigor I've heard about. Please if anyone has any ideas here , feel free to jump in.
And as far as sibbing it, I just want some more seeds from this fruit with a different cross in it , but still being a hungarian fruit............Paul

Hey Paul- Glad to hear you bought my theory! No charge for you tho. Anywho- Im planting vigorous seeds and making my own purified genetics all in the same year-

712 Kuhn, 798 Ailts,703* Smith,764 Mombert, 909.5 Lloyd, 940 Mombert '00

712 Kuhn and 764 Mombert are my vigorous seeds. 798, 703, and 909.5 are all getting selfed in an attempt to produce purified seeds. 940 mombert is just plain pretty and will be selfed.

I have a Calai 869.5 that will be planted and after that it will be seeds from Buddy Conleys pumpkins that Paul helped me get (thanks Paul). As for crosses it will mainly be the Conley 699.5. Long and very orange. Sorry, no green here please.

For me it will probably be:
805 Pukos 00 x (771.6 Rockwell 00)
771.6 Rockwell 00 x (805 Pukos 00)
547 Armstrong 00 x (805 Pukos 00)
I don't think I can go wrong with any cross I make here, but since I've already selfed the 547, I'll rule that one out. In a perfect world, I'd prefer bright orange or dark green, but that probably won't happen with these 3. So, just hoping for well shaped solid pumpkins here.

HKJ....You have now seen the wealth of seeds that are out there for the asking this year. I know most people have many more seeds than they can ever plant in a lifetime and its thier first year doing this.....next year will be the same only you'll have a larger network of friends by then, and more growers will have entered the hobby and offered seeds.......so it stands to reason that there will be no shortage of good looking seeds for years to come. So if you agree with this why not do this : Make a list of seeds you want to plant...maybe 8 or so when you can only plant 3....then germinate all 8 and, since they ALL are seeds you want to plant, pick the 3 BEST LOOKING SEEDLINGS and plant them. Once they are planted (important !) tell your wife to snip the others with a scissor while you are at work. Problem solved...there will be just as many if not more great ones next year........G

Tell your wife is right. I remember talking my brother through it last year. He just couldn't bring himself to snip off a plant. I almost felt like I was dealing with a "jumper".....LOL.....Paul
