For real Paul, What would be the classification? Same as it is, depending on color?

Paul is being seriuos. Depending on what the offspring throw. If it's part green/gray it's classified as a squash. not a true squash but a squmpkin

There is no catagory, it is either judged pumpkin or squash according to the grid system....

I'm going to the Southeastern Growers Conference in Feb. I should learn a lot. Georgia probably will not grow a 1000#er but I'm giving it my best shot. Good luck to me and everyone else!

To make this easy, there are 2 basic color genes. One is cream, the other is green. The cream color gene is the dominant gene, and the green is teh recessive. If the pumpkin that crosses with the squash is double dominant, then the offspring from the seeds will always be a "pumpkin at heart". If it has a squash gene and a dominant gene, and is crossed with a squash plant, the offspring will be approximately 50% pumpkin at heart, and 50% squash at heart. The squampkin comes in to the equation from external factors. This is just summing up the color genes. There are several other genes that come into play with pumpkins, there are intensity genes, and variation genes involved as well. But the basic genes are the dominant and recessive color genes. in my opinion, you can cross a squash with a pumpkin or pumpkin with a squash and still grow a pumpkin that looks nothing like a squash...it looks like a pumpkin. Where is bob wells??? how green was your 655 pumpkin from the 455 andrews (722 Holland 92 x 52 cilibert 91 (that threw green))???? Tom is right, greening on the outer skin of the pumpkin is external factors, which pretty much is the a combination of the factors of mother nature and what type of shading structure you use. Once piece of advice, do not use black landscaping.....

The Generic seeds that I tried to grow last year developed some that were creme/orange on top and any part of the fruit touching the ground was dark green. The others went all orange. Mother Nature does play a part int the external scheme of things....Tom

Hey Casey, I'm a little confused here. There are 2 squash that comes to mind. The Lyons 900 & Corkum 616. Although I've never seen a picture of either, they throw pure "looking" pumpkins & squash both. I know you can't argue that Brett's squash off the 900 are pure green squash. And also Ben Hebbs squash off the 616 are also pure green. But both of these also throw nice looking orange specimens also. Now I know a slight greening may be external factors. But how do we explain a seed that throws "deep" green & "bright" orange. I'm not trying to argue, I'm just trying to make heads or tails of this. By the way I'm growing a 900 Lyons this year & I'm hoping it throws green........Paul

Ok, the bright colors deal with the intensity genes. Remember that the dominant genes carry the color. If you have intense color genes, then they will carry intensity to the fruit. Or something like that anyway. Tom Beachy

paul, you are correct, the 900 lyons and 616 do throw both true squash and true pumpkins, and they do not seem to throw squmpkins. did you see a picture of my 527.5??? it was a bright, almost blaze orange from the 616 corkum seed. there was not much green on it, if any at all.
I think that if you expose a oranger pumpkin to the sun, the sun will help intesify the orange color of that pumpkin...as my 527.5 was not shaded most of the time later on in its life. I also think it helped keept the pumpkin from netting over, or that would have dulled the orange color of the skin. just an observation i noticed this year....
i am also growing the 900 lyons paul, and i hope it get green too, one of us will, but who??? lol...i hope it is me!!
what do you plan to cross your 900 with paul? i want to cross mine with the 535 wolf squash, 703 Smith squash, or 712 kuhn. not sure, maybe will have two squash on the plant (or pumpkins).

I am planning on setting a main fruit crossed with a Andrews 455 ( 950+,& 655 the first year ain't bad at all) I'm also hoping to set a 2ndary fruit for a seed cross. A friend across town is also planning on growing a 900, so I'll probably sibb it...........Paul

Paul, The 720 Welty was also orange from the 900.8. But, each seed in the pumpkin is of different genetic makeup, causing some to show the dominant gene and some to show the recesive gene. That is why it can grow both orange pumpkins and green squash. Tom

Yes the 720 was orange, but it threw nice & green if I remember right. That is what I was trying to explain to Casey. That you can cross a squash & pumpkin & get true squash...........Paul
