one of the top seeds will be the 652sundstrom 01 i've sent a bunch of them out just wait till you see what they bring on ebay next year (bad joke) my real choices are all the seeds that fellow growers share as they all posses the possibility of the big one if conditions are right

I have a feeling that the selfed 723's and selfed 712's will do good. I'm going to make sure my 798 Ailts does well in my patch.

Joe I know that you beleive with other growers that self crossed pumpkins are the way to go but I can't find any self crossed pumpkins which have grown really big ones. I think one has to look for sib and closely related crosses which have been cross back into it's self no more than 3 generations back. I know there are a few self crosses which have produced 800-900 lb offspring. but all of the really big hitters are not self crossed. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Mark

900+ fruit grown from self crossed pumpkins
1090 Wier ...off the 490 Donkers (a selfed 990 Bax) 1036.5 Kline ... off the 968 Sproule (a selfed 690 Sproule) 978.5 Lloyd ... off the 650 Lloyd 96 (a selfed 752 Craven) 975.6 Gervais ... off the 1092 Burke (a selfed 935 Lloyd) 975 Zehr ... off the 914 Wier (a selfed 792 Holland) 962 Willemse ... result of 5 generations of selfing 945.5 DeJong ... off the 836 Craven (a selfed 827 Holland) 935 Lloyd ... off the 875 Lloyd (a selfed 687 Lloyd) 900.5 Lyons* ... off the 724 Willemse ( a selfed 573 McCahill...which was the result of 3 gens of selfing)
Does selfing work? I think the numbers speak for themselves. Is selfing the best option? Maybe it is maybe it isn't, but a darn good alternative to blind crossing for sure.
When looking at selfed fruit one must not only look at the generation it was selfed, but look back a few generations to see what was brought into the gene pool before the selfing was done. ie...935 Lloyd, 900.5 Lyons*, 724 Willemse, etc....all proven producers.
We shall see what the selfed fruit from 2001 produce....once again time will tell the tale.
PS....
xxxx Rivard ... off the 1062 Rivard (a selfed 914 Wentzell) .. hey ya never know!
:) Rock

Here are my pumpkin picks for the new "hot" ones Vanlderstein- 945 Toftness-707 Rose-960 Ciliberto-923 As far as "hot" squash picks , I think there is one that stands out. The only problem is it throws both orange & green. But so does the Lyons 900 & we all seek that one too. The Andrews 455...........Paul

to me, the 2001 seeds do not look as good (in potential) as the potential of the 2000 seed. THat is just my opinion of course. If you crossed two seeds that have thrown many 1000 lbers, does it mean it will throw a 1000 lber?? no. Kind of like people expecting a big one from the 1000 lb seed they planted and not the 300 lb seed they planted.....who knows, the 2001 seed probably will turn out to be really good and then i will have to eat my words.
of the 2001 seeds, the ones i like are
980 Kuhn 821 Hester (616 corkum x 900.5 lyons)-both parents exhibit great plant characteristics

Does 1000 lbers on each side mean it will throw one? I agree Of course not it is all a bet, but thats where my money (patch)is.
Good luck to everyone this season.

Rock I stand corrected there are a couple self crossed which have grown 2 1000 lbers. The point I was making is that it seem you need to add some new genes in to the mix. The really big producers have crossed back into there original genes,at least once. If one wants to retain certain true genetic traits self pollination is the way to go. But correct me if I'm wrong. mark P.S. I'm hopping the self pollination theory is right and i'm going to do my best to prove you right. best of luck

It's true that the good producers like the 935 and 900.5* did have a new "genetics" introduced from the pollinators .... the genes were isolated and the intro of the new genes created a kind of hybrid vigor that the offspring of this first generation benefit from. Well that's the rough lines of a theory that is starting to gain in popularity I think.
This is not much different than what many good producers known today benefitted from (strongly inbreed lines like the Lloyd's, Holland's, etc), just a different way of obtaining it...and possibly a faster way too.
That is what I am aiming for when I do a selfing. I do hope the first generation (off the 1062) will produce well, but its the offspring that might be more interesting producers.
As far as other selfed seeds, not this year. My main patch (home) has room for three plants, I am (probably)planting the 914 again and the 875 Dill (aother 914 offspring) along with my 1062. :))

Jim Gatewood's 743#(mentioned above) was grown on the Calai 846 and pollinated by the Mombert 940(2000). My 673# was a result of the same cross and seeds were available at this site. Geez, I hope someone gives MY seeds a try!

The Seeds Mr Kilbert donated to the seed page have just as good of a chance for a record pumpkin as any out there. Check out the crosses he made. I have several of them. Going by the parents of his seeds how can you go wrong. Thanks to him and others for their donations.

Kilr, Thanks for donating your seeds to this site. Your 673# was one of my first picks to try for 2002. I also have the 634.5# and plan to plant those also. I hope to have half as much luck that you had this year....Tom

My observation of these posts shows many seeds that are somehow related to the 846 Calai 99. Was this the "Hot Seed" last year? Must feel great Kilr to have your seed mentioned more than once on this prestigious list. Congrats!

I might be wrong, but I think Peter Carters 995 01 might be pretty good. The cross was also the 846 Calai with the 859 Mombert. Now if only I can do it justice and grow it well.

BigWheels, I believe the best seeds to grow in 2002 are the ones not to closely related. I have seeds from many of the pumpkins grown over 1000# in 2001. I have been researching their parentage, and I must say that a disturbing number have been crossed with the same "fab five" for the past couple of years. It is my belief that as pumpkins become more, and more, "inbred" (no offence to my fellow southern growers)that they become increasingly suceptable to mutation and other ill side effects.

Why would reference to the inbreeding of pumpkins offend someone from the South?

So the 801.5 Stelts is the magic seed, its mother. So would crossing back with another seed related to the 801 be a good idea? Mike

Once a seed becomes "hot" it is very hard for the common grower to obtain. You may want to check the genetics of the hot seeds then look for similar crosses done more recently which may produce the next hot seed. You'll have a better chance of getting one before they're hot.
A good example is the 723 Bobier 1999. Everyone knows that is one of the hottest seeds around right now so it's hard to come by. In the 2001 season the 845 Bobier 2000 produced the 1260 Weir. Turns out its the same cross as the 723 just done a year later. It pays to do your homework.
