How do you know if the compost that you are using is alive and good to go for making tea. I have some 3 year old leaf compost sitting in a pile, after AI make a batch of tea there really isn't any foam just some bubbles, and it smells more like kelp meal than anything else.

Ive been using this recipe and brewing in my garage

compost 2 cups to 5 gal

molasses (7.5 TBSP to 5 gal)
fish hydrolysate (2.5 tsp to 5 gal just)
kelp meal (2.5 TBSP per 5 gal)
1 TBSP alfalfa meal (5 TBSP per gal )

I think most use worm castings as the main ingredient. Or at least have it as part of the tea.
Castings will have most of the organisms that will live in the tea (the foam you are looking for)

I personally have also used singular ingredients. I used just straight up banana peels. I did not even have to let them compost.
