if i get ambitious this year..i might try 2 row harrington barley...
don't know if it would be helpful to the kin..but at least there might be a chance of getting another generation of barley

I will use Mighty Gold Mustard seed for a cover crop again for the whole patch next year for fighting soil diseases and soil born insects.

Hey, my dear friend Ed! I'm glad to hear you are asking about a cover crop. Must mean you are going to get serious about growing a big pumpkin again! I use Holland's mix....rye, oats & vetch. Don't know if that's suitable for VA. You could ask Joel. Glenna

Fall Rye here Ed, super deep and lots of rooting. Has really helped the tilth of our soil and adds a nitrogen boost for early season plant growth.

If I lose a plant and put in a cover crop before Labor Day I use Dwarf Essex Rape and Groundhog radish. Both in the mustard family and disease suppression benefits. Otherwise it is rye.

I will be planting winter rye and hairy vetch which are good winter crops. Till in the spring, after mowing when about 10-12" high.
