Hello All just looking for thoughts/advice on my lineup next year. I have a spot prepared for 3 kins. I can expand it to four if absolutely necessary. This is only my second year, and I am debating on using what I think are the “best” seeds for next year when I may learn even more.

Originally I was planning to grow the 1910 tobeck (2230X1625), 1795 McCracken (2145X1625) and maybe one of the great 2145X2230 crosses or 2230X2145’s that are out there.

Then I started thinking about going for heavy X heavy and heavy X large ott. Like 2106 Schmit X 1689 barron (2230X1916) 27% heavy. As well as 1834 Vincent because it intrigues me. Or if I can my hands on a 1724 Schmit

Then I learned about auctions and wound up with a 1625, 2145, and 2307. Which could be thrown in anywhere. I am intrigued by a 2307X2145 cross, but Im sure it will be done by someone (maybe Ron).

And what to do with my 1625. Im tempted to cross it with the 1689 27% barron to make some super heavy genetics to cross on a large OTT next year. So for this year I could go 1625, 1689, 2307. Really hard to know where to use some of the proven seeds that are becoming more scarce.

Any thoughts?

You have a lot of good seeds there. The best thing to do is pick three out of a hat and use them. Then you won't have any regrets half way through the season as to whether you made the right choice;)

Always good to use proven seeds rather than seeds fresh out of pumpkins grown in 2016. I have limited space, so can't take too any chances with unproven/new seeds. Newish growers will do better with seeds that have already been grown and "proven" by other growers.

Best of luck in 2017.

I like your 2145 seed as your main breeder. If you get the 1625g parent instead of the 1756h/j youre still in good shape. All of those crosses have promise.I'd grow the 2145 and pull the other two out of a hat:)

Wow, judging from the seeds you got at auctions, I'd say you have a lot of money invested in seeds already. With those genetics, you could make some potentially awesome crosses. I think it's good that you're planning a breeding strategy into the future. I don't feel qualified on giving advice regarding this though. I'm not very informed on genetics from the past 5 years or so(except I know some about orange producers). I recall someone mentioning the 2145 McMullen is a cross between two selfed seeds. I believe the 2009 Wallace had one selfed seed in the cross. These are two very successful crosses. Maybe the selfed seeds have something to do with it, or it could be a coincidence. Something to consider maybe.

I'd grow the 2145, 1625, 2307, and make that 4th spot for the 1689
2145 x 2307
1689 x 2145
1625 x 2307
2307 x 2145
That's how I would cross them

Sounds like you've got some good stuff to work with...I think you'll do fine with whatever you decide

Ditto jlindley but I would self that last 2307. There aren't many of those and if you make two McMullen crosses you will have a lot of seeds and they may not be unique because someone else will likely make that cross also.

And if you self it I will bid on some of them next year or trade for a 2307 x 2307 . I think that would be some good genetics. I think some state records are coming down very soon :)

I'm debating 2307xself or 2307X1625 or even 2307x1689 that would line up both the 2230 and 1916 on both sides

I would cross the 2307 with the 1625. Really heavy genetics mixed with large bodied fruit could turn out well.

Jake, sorta unintelligent about genetics...what does "would line up both the 2230 and 1916 on both sides" mean? I know they are both great seeds, but don't know what...line up on both sides...is about? Peace, Wayne
