Is this going to make a squash or pumpkin? Orrr is it a complete 50/50?

All this talk about squash has me possibly wanting one but not sure what to expect.

Anytime you father a squash with a pumpkin you'll likely get a pumpkin classified fruit the next year....its rather rare to get a squash from a squash x pumpkin cross....and it doesnt seem to matter weather Daddy was brilliant orange or salmon/pink/white...its not so clearcut as a pkn=dominant, sq=recessive relationship........just my experience.

Depends on the genetic background of the pumpkin. If there are hidden squash genes from green ancestors (maybe some generations back ?) theres a little chance for a squash. But normally pumpkin x squash results in pumpkin offspring in F1 Generation. But selfing or sibbing this offspring should result in at least 25 % green offspring, backcross with a squash should enhance chances to 50 %. I made this procedure with 1068 x squash and 1231 x squash and results are fitting to theory. But as Glenn mentioned, its probably not simple recessive / dominant genetics.

I have had similiar results as benny_p. The pumpkin x squash have always resulted in pumpkin. When I crossed the squash x pumpkin with a true squash the resulting fruit were 50% squash and 50% pumpkin. I did this with the 1531 Haist from 2010.

I talked to Jeremy about growing it next year. He seems to think it may lean towards being a pumpkin. But I'm going to give it a try. Either way it I think it will produce something big!

I expect nothing but orange from her seeds next year. That is if there are any. I'll find out on Sunday.
