Steam Mill

Hi everyone this is a little about myself. I'm 53 married with 2 beautiful daughters in Nova Scotia, grew up on a tobacco farm from the early 60's to late 90's , we also had hogs for approximately 20 years or so during that time . I also grew strawberries and sweet corn during the early 2000's.During that time my father got some chicken quota which my wife and I just took over 2 years ago. I presently also work full time at Valley Waste Resource as a heavy equipment operator been there for the last 15 years.

As for growing pumpkins my wife took me to see the Windsor weigh off back in 1991 thought it was really great how people could grow them so large and thought how hard could this be . So got myself and 5 of my friends and family members the next year to have our own competition, that was in 1992. We learned lots in those early years. We did that yearly and the group grew until about 17 growers mostly family members up till 2009 we were finally getting to the 700 Lb range. Then in 2010 we got a hold of some seeds from Jeff Reid which really got the group going from there. My first offical GPC weigh off was in 2012 which I grew the 3rd longest Long Gourd in Canada that year . That's when it all started . In 2013 I grew a World Record Long Gourd 139.25 inches(2013) which held for two years. I've also grown a 139.38 Long Gourd (2015), 1402 lb Pumpkin(2015) , 1352 lb Squash (2019) , 130 LB Watermelon (2014)6.15 lb Tomato(2015) , 165 lb Field pumpkin (2014), 163 lb English Green Marrow (2019).

I looking forward to be the Eastern Rep of growing giant vegetables . Hopefully things will come around this year and everyone has a great growing season. And I can get to some of the other weigh off's around my area. Can't wait to meet the other rep's and get a little more insight in what it really takes to make this sport as great as it already is.
