With all the vine burying, pruning of unwanted third stage growth, etc, its easy to forget to check on the stump. One reason why some, like myself forget, is because it gets hidden from all the growth. Today I decided I better check mine, and sure enough ,3 of my 4 stumps had small amounts of rot starting. I think they will be fine. I did the scraping and dusting, and left my cover off so the sun would hit it. My son covered them back up this evening.

So, be sure to check on them, and it should be done every day, since most of our plants are maxed out and sucking in a lot of water. The stumps can spring a leak at any time.

I have a lot of extra time at work with this new and boring job, and I have a computer in front of me for 8 hours now, so I may as well help if I can. Just another heads up.

I have them covered to keep them dry. At planting I elevated my stump area, I'm sitting roughly 6in higher than the surrounding plant.

The getter is when you see what looks like foam! Many times a fan will be needed to help dry it out. Peroxide is a good tool to have on hand, too. I put a sprayer cap on the bottle to deliver it where I want it. Already had a foamer, so far it seems to be stopped!

Yes , what Porkchop said. If you have the time, or someone that can help, it would probably be best to keep covered at night to keep dew and rain off, then uncover in the morning. let some sun hit it to keep it dry.

I saw some gell looking goo on one of mine yesterday. I scraped and put captan on it. I should probably get a small fan on it to help it dry. we are very humid here now. I should have snapped a pic of it Hobbit, but did not want to go all the way back in my house and take my dirty shoes off, you know the routine, lol !

Zappa, in past years, I dusted every cut I made on my plants w/Captan...this year I cannot find Captan...any ideas? Peace, Wayne

Amazon, captan will be delivered to your door in 2 days!!! Almost everything I've been using this year, fungicide and insecticide, can be found through Amazon. Get prime and most products are free 2 day delivery.

Peace, something i am doing this year on the pumpkins, is i trench ahead of my sides as i have done for years, but, i will pinch all the tiny 3rd stage stuff and all unwanted flowers. I will not bury until a day of two later. This way all of the wounds are dry before I bury. No captan necessary in my opinion. Believe me, i am not an expert at growing these, but this makes sense to me.

Well it's been hot, humid, and rainy for the last 3 days with heat indexes near 100. While checking my stumps after work I noticed a section of main vine about 4 ft from the stump on my 1444 that had begun to rot. Quickly got out the surgery kit a removed all rotten material I could see which went all the way into the cavity. Removed section ended up being about 1/2" wide by 8" long. Sprayed with peroxide solution and then dusted heavily inside and out with captan. Placed fan on it and covered with plastic end table as there is a chance of more rain tonight. Hopefully I can stop it here. Everything else looks good, rest of main feels solid. Any other suggestion feel free to share.

Sounds like your right on top of it...u could also paint it w straight daconil but prolly not necessary if you keep it dry
