Horrible luck starting seeds this year. Finally have a few young sprouts. My grow light consists of 4 x 54W 3ft bulbs. Whats the ideal distance above the newly sprouted plants to keep the lights? I was thinking about 6-8 inches? Just want experienced advice as I'm getting a dreadfully late start and want to avoid additional setbacks. Huge thanks!!!!

If there t12, just above the seedlings. And drop your heat mat temp into the 72 to 75. this will stop them from getting leggy. As the grow and touch the light move it up a little.

height is really dependent on the type of grow light you are using. I have LED, metal halide and hps. The led i can put right on top of seedling, I dont have to worry about heat. The metal halide and hps both put out enough heat that i use a thermometer to measure distance. Even with cooling fans, heat is an issue. More light is better, but not if you are cooking your plants to get there.

I use the weak t12's, but I still have a small fan blowing across the tops of the plants. I keep the leaves 1-2" from the tubes and you need to keep the air flowing or your cots will get funky from the heat.
