Hi all, this year i am growing my first ever giant pumpkin and currently it is the size of a soccer ball. I have trimmed the vines and all the other pumpkins and flowers off of the plant. Roughly how long does it take for the pumpkin to grow from this size to a decent sized fruit? Of course we assume everything goes perfectly and that the weather conditions remain perfect. I check my plant at least 3 times a day :)

hard question to answer...what's "decent" size?.. This season We went from soccer ball to 1000lbs in about 35 days...they get bigger than that... Hopefully you see some magic happening soon...good luck

When I grew Rock 504 Chandler(1513 Sherwood x self) earlier this year it put on about 5" a day in cc when the patch was receiving lots of rain, but when it stopped getting rain the growth on the pumpkin slowed down. So, keep the patch evenly moist NOT wet and you could get a BIG pumpkin.

Given it's current size, within the next 40 days it will be at 80% of it's final weight. The most exiting part of the year for me.

There are a lot of variables in size and speed of growth.

Is the plant healthy?

How big is the plant?

How much are you watering?

What are your temps?

In my climate the pumpkins start accelerating their daly gains around day 22 and are at their max gains day 27-30.They should grow at least 50 more days. So crack a cold one and enjoy the show.

Thanks for the replies. The weather here is around 90 degrees and sunny almost every day. I am feeding the plant a steady 1.5 gallons of water a day. I can't wait to see what the final size will be. I will be absolutely stoked with a 200lb pumpkin.

Need a lot more water then that!!!! It's all water weight 1.5 gallons a day won't compensate for evaporation! Water wide and get those roots looking for water. Good Luck! GrowEmBig!

Usually the root system is as large as the area covered by the plant (for example, in case of a 400 sqft plant you would have to water the whole 400 sqft area), and the amount of water should correspond to about 1 inch of rain per week (in case of hot weather you need to water even more).

Hey everyone, my pumpkin has grown no larger but it has turned orange and it has also grown an evil smile. It has been 6 days since my last post and to me the pumpkin looks slightly different. It has defined lines and it has lost its perfect round shape. Is it dying? Is this normal? I thought it would of doubled in size by now. Check the image at the link below.

Try more water! I water 30-50 gallons a day per plant..however my soil drains well...keep all soil moist under and around plant..roots can be found as far as 20 ft from main!
