Hi, we are first time growers and planted a giant pumpkin at our allotment in June. By the end of July we had lost a couple of melon sized fruits (they rotted off) but had one fantastic fruit already looking to be around 30lb we're guessing. Today, we went down there to find it had moved (although we had it supported) and has completely split from the vine before it has ripened. I have a ten year old who is going to be heartbroken! So my question is, is it likely that there is any hope of the pumpkin fruiting again at this point in the season, is there anything we can do to encourage this, and also is there anything we might be able to do to preserve the one we have given that it wasn't fully ripe? We are gutted about our pumpkin bereavement...

If the plant is still heathy looking then yes there's is still time to set a fruit...it is getting late to get a real big one ...if you are aborting fruit there could be a number of reasons causing this...one being too much nitrogen...my guess is if you can figure out why that is happening and can fix the situation the plant will start setting fruits again...I say carve the one that fell off and give the kid an early bag of Halloween candy.. He'll be aight...hope this helps.. Good luck

I'm sorry about your pumpkin woes, Amy. I'm a first timer too, and the anxiety is getting to me. We need to understand that this is not our whole life, just a hobby, but I do sympathize!

Best to you in getting another fruit. - MeToo.
