Pumpkins and Autsim

Case grande arizona

I know pumpkins can be grown I southern AZ because I have been to the patches out here. I want to grow pumpkins for my kids and obviously myself. I have planted 8 hills in my back yard. Amish pumpkin and big max. What is the best way to get a lot of pumpkins out of them and I guess the easiest way, organically. I put a good of 20year old cow manure in my garden bed. My son is autistic and he loves them. Please help us get some pumpkins. Thanks for any help!!!

What Pap is saying is, our growing season begins in the fall when we close down our previous season. It is never ending, but if quality and quantity are important to you, the more preparation the better. Make the challenges fun and read all you can stand and them some here on BP. Wishing you and your son the very best!

I've been reading A lot of memos on here about fertilizing. A lot of what I read is forein to me. I'll I have access to is cow manure and fish emulsion . Since I have already filled my soul with lots of poop, when should I feed again if at all. I planted spookie pumpkins and big max variety.... Thanks again for your help

I suggest studying some growers guides to growing, in particular ferts, feeding, fungi and pest control for beginners. I am on a very tight budget, and new funds annually are mostly nonexistent, but I have lucked up on getting a 1138 pounder last year. Another grower who started a few years back when I did,has already produced over 1700 pounds! So, I approach each season as a learning opportunity, and try to be more proactive and tweaking what I have available. Best to you and your son, have fun!

P & A,

You've got a great resource about growing giants in hot weather conditions with your local club. They start in the winter for the May weigh-off.

Get in touch with Dean and Dave. Having mentors that understand your specific growing conditions is very important. they are both active here on this website. Here's the link to the homepage for the AZGPG:

Howdy, I have attempted to grow in the summer in Phoenix for 4 years, did it successfully the first year...the main obstacle is getting cool temps to set pumpkins. I did it the first year when a storm front rolled in, in mid August, and I set Prizewinners and AG's all at once. I would say water them twice a day if you can, shade them in the late afternoon, if you can. I know Big Max will be hard to pollinate in the heat, but others may be easier.....I'm giving Phat Jack field pumpkins a try under 30% shade in Phoenix.....that is a type of field pumpkin...which is supposedly easier to set in the heat than Atlantic Giants. (I think Prizewinners, Big Max are related to Atlantic Giants)....also check out My diary Davidmpls and DeanAZ diary...we grew Jan-May and broke the low AZ record this year....
