This is my very first attempt at growing a giant pumpkin so this is all new to me. The space that I am using and that I prepared my soil for is only big enough for 1 vine. I have 3 plants that are growing in this space but I now think that it is time to get rid of 2 of them. My only problem is the one that is the biggest and the best looking of the 3 has a problem. Right at the point where the vine comes out of the ground it has a split in it that is about an inch long. Will this split be the eventual demise of the plant and should I pick the second best plant to be the one that I go with? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

if the split goes with the grain (parallel with the length of the plant) it will be fine. Just put something over it like a board or a chair or something to keep the rain and water out, and check it often for any signs of soft tissue.

If it is across the vine it really depends on how deep it is. If the vine is growing well it probably will be fine, but starting the season with a problem, rarely gets better with time.

Good Luck!

Thank you for the info. The split does go with the grain parallel with the vine. I am glad to hear that because it is by far the best one that I have at this point. I will figure out a way to keep it covered and dry. Thanks again

I am currently having the same issue with the horizontal splitting in the main vine.

Have you ever had this issue in the past or is this your first shot at it?

yes we have had splits. generally caused by twisting in the wind or falling too fast, or my clumsiness when moving vines.
