buy any powdered fungicide and dust the area, then put a sheet over the pumpkin. this may keep the varmit away plus the fruit is protected a bit from the sun and the chewers. ps---moth balls around the pumpkin will keep mice away as well. the wounds will heal and scar over. pap

You may need something to scare the critter away so it doesn't do more damage. Fox or coyote urine from the hunting or trapping section of the sporting goods store will scare off animals like groundhogs and rabbits. Apply it to cotton balls or small pieces of cloth and scatter around the pumpkin.
