I just recently started a new diary you can find in the diary forum. I plan on starting this experiment with an Atlantic Giant. I was just wondering if anybody in her has tried this method before. I have seen it done with cucumbers but not on a competition scale using giant pumpkins. I will be posting pics soon. If anybody has any kind of input on this topic please chime in.

I have never done it the kratky way, but I do no ag's need a lot of room for roots. If your plant is 35 feet long, the roots will grow that long, that is why walking boards are used, not to compact the root system.<-my thoughts.

Yes I understand, and agree that they do get long. My thoughts are to start the plant in a 30-55 gallon res and then let the vine roam along a prepared surface of topsoil. I have never heard of the walking boards but that sounds like a good idea. Thanks

there is a youtube video on this method. I think he grew an 87 pounder. the sheer volume of plant needed to support a 2000lb fruit is the hard part with hydroponics

Do pumpkins float? If so could the vines be grown on top of the water with the pumpkins acting as floats? May try this someday when I get a pond.
