I have two big one growing on the same plant. The bigger one is growing about 10-12 lb/day and the smaller one is about 8. The smaller one only measures about 181 inches. Should I cut It off or will it make that much of a difference. Thanks. Also, what could I use to cover these with. I wanted to keep the sun off but now I'm starting to get a few spectators looking at them. Could I lay a green towel over it to hide it or will that cause problems when it gets wet. Thanks

A lot of folks drape a white sheet over the pumpkin. If it gets wet its thin enough that it dries pretty quickly. If it gets cold at night put some comforters over the pumpkin. Regarding your two pumpkins, if you are happy with both of them, keep them, the plants have the ability to grow a couple pumpkins to 500, 700 plus pounds. If you are looking to compete for weight and do decide to cut one of them loose, I know a lot of growers will cut 1/3-1/2 the stem off one day and do the rest over the next day or two to prevent a surge to the other pumpkin causing a split.

If you just want nice pumpkins leave it on if you want to get as big as you possibly can cut it off. It will definitely help. It may only give you a couple of pounds more a day but over the course of 3-4 weeks that really adds up. don't do it all at once or you could split the remaining kin. Cut it through half way and then wait a day to take it off completely.

I read somewhere on here that unless your growing competitively then these plants can easily sustain two pumpkins.
I have two plants for comparison an 854 and 1770. The 854 has one pumpkin on it which is about 750lbs. The 1770 has two, one on the main also at 750 lbs and a sidevine one at 230 lbs. There's always the question of what would the mainvine 1770 be if there was just one pumpkin on the plant. I will never know.
