Plants with high levels of nitrogen in the soil won't switch into fruit production mode easily if at all. I am guessing the answer will be "yes," but is this still true when you feed nitrogen through the leaves? I was wondering because the plant doesn't have to work to pull nitrogen through the leaves the way it would through the roots. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

It is true that high amounts of nitrogen will prevent good fruit and flower production. Feeding thru the leaves, the plant will only intake up to 10% and rest will run down the plant and be taken up by the roots.

I always have problems when I mess with nitrogen. I just stay away now other then a little ammonium early.

So.Cal, do you feed through the leaves or the roots.
First I learned that pumpkin plants could take up the ammonium form of nitrogen without spending any of its own energy to get, which it would have to do for other forms. Then I read that the ammonium form locks up other cations in the soil, especially Ca. I am guessing that from now on I should just spread bloodmeal in the area before planting and feed the ammonium form through the leaves if the plant is not as green as I like. Spreading bloodmeal was one of the first things I regretted this year besides the fact that I couldn't fix my junk soil.
Thanks for the replies.

Hold on tight or die trying ;)

The way I feed, I'm not to worried about calcium locking up.

A little bird flew by Vince's the other day and said things looks very good.

His plant has dwarfed mine. Now I am even more angry at my soil conditions. Oh well...first time.

Oops, I meant to say that NOT spreading bloodmeal was my mistake...

My Nitrogen is off the charts at the home patch. Shocked the plant and growth was badly stunted for about a week.

First female - did not open.
Second female - opened, 3 lobes, don't think its taken.
Third female - opened today, 5 lobes, figures crossed!
