Success Resulting From Many Failures.
Any success is built on many failures and it is the continued perseverance to work through the many challenges that lead to a rewarding experience. While I am fortunate to have the pumpkin I do this year it is mainly because of two key pumpkins that never made it to a weigh-off.
The first was back in 2012 https://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=190092 This was a pumpkin that did not become infected with mosaic virus despite the plant becoming infects. This was also the only pumpkin that was 20+days old when the plant became infected with the virus and the pumpkin itself did not show any signs of the virus despite the plant being fully infected. This led to the idea that cell division only occurs for the first 20-days and further investigation into cellular biology. From the findings of this pumpkin the hormone spray "Anthesis" was developed after extensive research. https://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=234656
The second pumpkin was grown in 2023 https://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=341307 The growth rate of this pumpkin showed a "proof of concept" for the growing practices that have been implemented and refined over the years. While this pumpkin did suffer from a rib split, it did show that the theories could work out to achieve surprising results.
As a result, not much in the ways of growing practices has change for me over the last three years, the downfall has been various splits that have led to my season ending prematurely.
