So to wrap up this rabbit hole that started in Horticultural curiosity, yet my original question is still left unanswered. Why don't apples self pollinate? So this is possibly the best explanation that Ai gave me; "In apple orchards, incompatibility between varieties can hinder fruit production. Many apple varieties are self-incompatible, meaning they cannot pollinate themselves and need another apple variety for fertilization. Some varieties may share a common S-genotype, which leads to incompatibility with other trees sharing that genotype."
