1676.5 Daletas ’12 (crown area)
I know many growers get “foaming stumps” and I am fortunate with my growing methods that I do not see very many at all. Here is a picture of the initial plant site (where the seedling originally went in the ground) to show that the main vine, crown and secondaries are as healthy as can be. There is no rot, foam or other problems. The black fabric around this area is simple weed-block to keep the weeds down which makes inspection of this area quite easy throughout the season. You can also see the label I put at each plant site directly from the initial planting pot as I want to make sure there are no chances of having a plant mix-up.
In addition to the weed-block, I also put a clear piece of glass supported with a little table made from PVC pipe over the area to help keep the area dry while still allowing sunlight to shine on the area. For irrigation, I use drip tapes which I think help quite a bit at reducing the chance of a foaming stump since the plant gets even and consistent water to all of its roots.
