The split was getting worse.
I've thought about it all day and as I saw it I had 3 choices.
1. Do nothing (not one of my strong suits -- lol) and watch it go ahead a bust open, most assuredly losing the fruit)
2. Try to seal it (couldn't fugure out with what, didn't figure it would stay sealed, and with this option, rot was the biggest concern (because I wouldn't be able to see what was going on until it was too late. Plus at the end, if I wanted to weigh it I think that would have disqualified it -- not sure that really matters at this point. Again seemed like the option would most likely end in losing the fruit.
3. Cut it open, relieve some pressure, try to dry it into a scar and see what happens. I've seen several that the stem has been split and the pumpkin made it to the end (that is my goal right now). Don Young sent me a pic of one of his last night that he had split open and said he could put his hand down in the cut.
