here a pic for my bro boz of the stem side cracking and cantaloping on the 1161. the stem side is the only place it is cantaloping or cracking as the rest is slippery smooth. hopefully you can see in the pic the stem side cracking for those who are concerned about there stem sides splits. these have come and healed since day 31 as it grows with no problems yet. cracks starting outside surface in (as opposed to an internal crack that leads all the way out) on the stem side have never taken down any of my pumpkins over the years. they are to be treated properly with fungicide and fanned if needed, but are just stretch marks for the most part. hopefully mine will continue plodding along slowly like boz's 1161 over the long haul, but this plant is in teribble shape and was the least resistant of pm of the 3 plants i grew this year. i have let new pop tertiaries grow and have about 25 new leaves forming which is refreshing to look at for a change, and hopefully they will help the duece make it to maybe the high 800s or even low 900s with a chance to be heavy and maybe see 1000 lbs. with this weird shape. i will always try a secondary set if it is my only chance cuz this secondary pumpkin proved to me that you can still get a nice big one to give away off a secondary set.
