signs of life. this morning i saw that one of the 1161s was pushing dirt. tonight after work i see that the other 1161, the 1385, both the 1185s, and 2 of the 1147s are also now pushing dirt. i removed the plastic sandwich baggies off the peat pots with signs of life and took them out from under the humidity dome and put them right under the flourescent bulbs. i expect to see seed coats and sprouts by tomorrow morning for these 7 pushing dirt tonight. the other 2 1147s will probably be pushing dirt by tomorrow. i will help remove any seed coats that need it tomorrow night. i let the sprouts do the work if they can, but if the seed coat dries out a bit and gets rigid, sometimes the leaf starts cutting itself while trying to force it open. this is when i spray a jet of water into the small gap between the seed coat and the leaves and moisten it up for a bit before gently pulling it off. sometimes the inside of a cot leaf will be stuck to the inner seed coat and removing the coat by hand removes one of the cot leafs. water sprayed to moisten it up will also help to avoid that situation as well. i will add some water in the black plastic garden tray in the morning and let the water wick its way up into the sprouted peat pots. doesn't take long for that starter mix to begin to dry out after removed from humidity dome. very happy the 1385 is pushing dirt as i was nervous. out of 36 attempted germinations last year, (most to give to newbies) i had 35 successes. the only failure last year was my 1385. hopefully all goes well while they push to get above ground and break free from the seed coats.
