Not looking too promising in the melon patch but I did turn on the heat cables and that is melting snow from underneath.

Friday, April 7 View Page
Melons looking good. Theres a 2537 there that germinated even though it was one of the more immature ones. Surprised me a bit.

Sunday, May 21 View Page
2006 Wolf is coming along nicely. Darkness from smoke isn’t helping though.

Monday, May 29 View Page
Other than the snow we had this winter, the last real rain we received was almost a year ago. I broke one of my tanks last year so here is the new one. Our well water is high in sodium so I haul water.

Monday, May 29 View Page
2006 Wolf Finally got some water on this patch. There is quite a bit of distance between each leaf and vine. I also removed the first female so I won’t be tempted. Also have some insect problems already.

Monday, May 29 View Page
202.5 Crews watermelon Spidermites are taking hold.

Monday, May 29 View Page
Random field pumpkin pic. This one is the 158 Crews. Late on these because I didn’t believe spring would happen.

Monday, May 29 View Page
2537 Crews First watering of this patch. Hopefully it likes it. Added quite a bit of N to this patch. Risky. First female bloomed days before the first male so thats odd… oh and it has one secondary vine throwing double everything. Like the plant though.

Monday, June 5 View Page
2537 Crews is growing fast. Getting ready to lay out the rest of the drip tape and plastic film. I was a little late cutting root holes and some went right through anyway.

Monday, June 5 View Page
Random field pumpkin pic, 110 Wursten. It was about to really rain so i stuck my hand out of the greenhouse.

Monday, June 5 View Page
Finally for the first time since last June, an amount of rain.

Monday, June 5 View Page
2006 Wolf is being prepared.

Monday, June 5 View Page
202.5 Crews watermelon growing well. But…

Monday, June 5 View Page
On the second biggest finger on the wrong end a melon got pollinated by something. I’m not stupid enough to cut off a melon that looks this good.

Thursday, June 8 View Page
2006 Wolf pollination day! This is technically the second female because I removed the first one when it was pea sized. There are about 18 secondaries before the first.

Thursday, June 8 View Page
2006 Wolf, the deed is done. 2006 x 2537

Monday, June 12 View Page
2006 Wolf Pretty sure the pollination took. Put some sand down after this pic.

Thursday, June 22 View Page
2537 Crews 10 DAP It has been cool and rainy for a couple of days. Good news, water tanks are almost full of rainwater now, bad news, had to run heaters because it’s been less than 8°C overnight and into morning. Diesel is only a $1.40 a litre now so thats about 14 bucks a night.

Friday, June 23 View Page
2006 Wolf 15 DAP

Tuesday, June 27 View Page
2537 Crews 15 DAP Needs to have some leaves trimmed. Has a small stem split that should be ok.

Tuesday, June 27 View Page
2006 Wolf 20 DAP 81.5” cir

Saturday, July 1 View Page
2537 Crews 20 DAP 72” cir. Let’s see what the next hour brings. Someone sent me a pic of inches of hail.

Sunday, July 2 View Page
2006 Wolf 25 DAP 108” cir Looking good, don’t think it’s putting weight on quite as fast as I’d like but our weather has fluctuated from too cold to too hot to too cold so I’m not surprise or disappointed. Things may change.

Friday, July 7 View Page
2537 Crews 25 Dap 94.5” cir Thats pretty good for this patch, right there with my best from it. Its been cooler and cloudy and smokey too. Very nice shape so far.

Friday, July 7 View Page
2006 Wolf 30 Dap 127” cir That’s a little off of last years best but it’s going to be hard to beat that. Colour is very yellow that usually a good signal of future orange.

Tuesday, July 11 View Page
2537 Crews 30 dap 111” cir This is one of those stem down fruits. No vine stress unless I have to dig a hole for it. This seems to show a lot from the daddy pumpkin so I expect an orange one.

Thursday, July 13 View Page
2006 Wolf 35 Dap 143” cir Not sure about the inny but they’ve made it to the end before. Still cool and cloudy or is it smoke? Probably both.

Sunday, July 16 View Page
2537 Crews 35 Dap 127”cir When I crossed the 2365 Wolf with the 300 Crews this was exactly what I wanted. The 2365 then grew the 2537 and I had a different shape in mind. Doing very well in this patch and looks like a shiny orange ribbed one.

Sunday, July 16 View Page
Pollinated a pumpkin on the 72 Carter Secondary, 72 Carter x 158 Crews 4 lobe. This plant is throwing double secondary vines.

Sunday, July 16 View Page
Pollinated 96 Butler 96 Butler x 110 Wursten 3 lobe secondary vine

Monday, July 17 View Page
2006 Wolf 40 Dap 155” cir still off a bit from last year but sunshine wasn’t the brightest. Pleased with the colour.

Friday, July 21 View Page
2537 Crews 40 dap 137” cir Its not growing as well as I hoped but again, like a broken record, its been cool and dim from smoke and clouds. Getting some lumpy ribs like the 510. Hopefully as brilliant orange too. Oh and I took some steps to help the stem on the ground problem.

Friday, July 21 View Page
72 Carter well and away my best plant in a far from best patch. The nameless fruit is a few days older. I pollinated that one at about 6 pm so after the whole day open its an open and self. Growing two fruits at the same time to avoid exploding, maybe.

Saturday, July 22 View Page
2006 Wolf 45 Dap 167” cir Looking like high teens for this one hopefully. Started so well. Going to be pretty though.

Thursday, July 27 View Page
2006 Wolf 50 Dap 176” cir Seem to have a flat mid 30’s growth curve going on. Never really ramped up the numbers but its not surprising considering the lack of sun and the flip flop between hot and cold that been going on. Have a few stretch marks now too.

510 Crews 10 Dap This was a back that I stuck in the ground. About 10 more days before it gets too cool to grow. If I get 30-40’days out of it I could get it to 300.

Tuesday, August 1 View Page
2537 Crews 50 Dap 156”cir This one is definitely taking after the pollinating plant that grew the 510. The 510 plant that I’m growing looks like it takes after the 2365. Thats pumpkin growing.

Wednesday, August 2 View Page
2006 Wolf 55 Dap 182” cir Falling off quite a bit now. Still a nice pumpkin.

Saturday, August 5 View Page
2537 Crews 55 Dap 170” ish cir Getting difficult to measure accurately because of all the ribs. Stem issues are being held in check.

Stem on a 158 Crews Fp cull

Saturday, August 5 View Page
158 Crews cull vs 96 Butler cull. Butler is growing a nice FP right now…

2006 Wolf 60 Dap 188” cir

Tuesday, August 8 View Page
One leaf on the 2006 Wolf had a hand sized spot of white velvety awfulness so just when I thought it was time to leave the patch I had to pull out the fogger and spray fungicide. Very early this year.

Wednesday, August 16 View Page
2006 Wolf 70 Dap 196” ish cir, at the end of the tape. Appears to grow when its sunny.

Sunday, August 20 View Page
2537 Crews 70 Dap It’s so ribbed I can’t get an accurate circumference without three people with three hands so… Anyway, the stem is still just a bit off the board so in the meantime everything is fine.

Monday, August 21 View Page
2006 75 Dap I know it’s growing because it’s splitting in places. Everything is fine. Fine.

Tuesday, September 5 View Page
Thats it for the field pumpkins. -5 C . Someone tell Greta I’m not buying her BS.

Wednesday, September 6 View Page
2006 Wolf 91 Dap Still growing. Getting closer to the coffee can. This view shows the cracks the orange ones get when they are old.

Saturday, September 9 View Page
2537 Crews 90 Dap Not quite 1400.

Sunday, September 10 View Page
2006 Wolf 95 Dap Nice to have some sun to bring out the colours.

Sunday, October 1 View Page
Pulled The 2537 Crews. Looks good and healthy. Good view of that stem clearance issue.

Thursday, October 5 View Page
Nice and thick. Seeds looked green. 72 Carter x 158 Crews 59kg. About to be a rotten soup.

Thursday, October 5 View Page
The fruit on this 72 Carter had a strange starburst type colour on the orange and green. Different. I like different.

Monday, October 9 View Page
2537 Crews fruit weighed 1428 lbs. It got sold so seeds are probably not coming back. Nice and orange.

Monday, October 9 View Page
The 2006 Wolf is now the 2037.5 Crews! 2006 Wolf X 2537 Crews Won the weigh off and Howard Dill.

Monday, October 9 View Page
The 2006 fruit grew 17.5” of ott after 95 Dap. Harvest 120 Dap 455.5” ott. Thats a bit more than 7lbs a day average and I needed every one of them. It was still growing so who knows how many more it could have gained.

Sunday, October 29 View Page
Decided to just install the film for overwinter instead of clear plastic and then changing over.

Thursday, November 16 View Page
Loving El Nino. Every day without snow is bliss.

Sunday, November 19 View Page
Seed harvest on the 2037.5 Crews Pretty good thickness and density.

Sunday, November 19 View Page
This is what’s left of the 2037.5 Crews ‘23, should make lots of pies. This maybe the most solid fruit I’ve grown in a long time. The only cracks were these little ones that always form on the bottom from being the flat spot. Decently thick and solid.
