Let the games begin! Filed, soaked and in the paper towels now. This year's lineup. 1985 Miller, 282 Scherber and 1415 Scherber. Both of my kids are growing 1409 Millers which will be crossed with the 282 Scherber to do the closest cross you can make to a 2009 Wallace without having the real thing. With a little luck, maybe in will work out. Will self the 1415 Scherber. That will make it the four generation cross of the best line of genetics out there (1385 selfed = 1725 Harp. 1725 Harp that grew the 2009 selfed = 282 Scherber. 282 Scherber selfed = 1415 Scherber which was a pumpkin that probably would have been a new Colorado state record but the pumpkin went down 3 weeks before the weigh-off.
This is the 1985 Miller pollinated today. Had some set backs in pollination this year but hopefully this one will be the keeper. Great plant so far. Fully terminated before the pumpkin except for the main vine because of the late pollination and I've used up all the space. Hopefully this will mean that all of the juice is going to be flowing to that pumpkin. If it doesn't pie because of it I think I will be in okay shape.
This is the 282 Scherber that I pollinated yesterday. This one is going to be trouble. One segment is mis-formed, but I'm already 20 feet out on the main and the next female won't be ready for about 8-10 days. Never had a bigger female than this one. Knowing that mom was the 1725 that grew the world record 2009 it makes you wonder if it just wants to grow.
