I am starting a tomato breeding project. I was originally going to grow in a greenhouse but they are not heating it until late January so I will have to wait until then to grow there. In the meantime I will be experimenting with growing on my porch. It's about 6' x 6' with two east facing windows. When the plants are larger I will use a 600 watt HPS light. For now I have the sprouts under a 200 watt four bulb T5 light. I started 15 seeds on Wednesday October 22nd in an incubator set at 80 degrees. Most had sprouted as of Sunday the 26th. As of today here are the results: 8.41 MacCoy 2 of 3 7.45 Martin 3 of 6 ZacZilla 6 of 6

Here are the seedlings. There are 4 cells which each have 3 seeds planted in them. The two cells on the left side are the ZacZilla's. The upper right is the MacCoy 8.41. The lower right is the Martin 7.45. I had an issue with one of the 8.41's having the seed case stick to it. I moistened it and tried to take it off but most of the seed leaves came off with it. Hopefully it recovers.

Dan had a couple of 8.41's that he started and was going to throw away. He was nice enough to send them in the mail to me. He made a really creative wooden stick cage inside the box to keep the seedlings from being crushed. It worked great. I potted them up and here is a picture of the two.

I also am playing with some cuttings that Margaret donated from her 7.45 plant and that Bill Foss donated from his 7.1 plant. Here is a picture of them. Bill's is the one in the upper right, and the rest are Margaret's 7.45. They are getting some color and doing quite well now.

I want to thank all of the people that donated to my tomato project. Dan MacCoy for donating seeds from his 8.41 world record tomato. Margaret Martin for donating seeds from her 7.45 tomato and cuttings from her plant. Marv Meisner for sending me seeds from the ZacZilla. Minnie Zaccaria for creating the ZacZilla. Bill Foss for digging up and donating his whole 7.1 plant. Rick Jollivette for hauling the plant back from Stillwater. And John Barlow for setting up the transfer. And Ron Wallace for gratiously sending some of his WOW program fertilizer product and t-shirt. I can't wait to try out the WOW on the tomatoes. Thanks Everybody! and hopefully we will make some really cool crosses.

Oops, I forgot to also thank Dan for sending me two more of his WR seedlings in the mail. Thanks Dan!
