Just for the heck of it I took some cuttings from the 1807 and 1647 plants. Here they are after a couple days.

Here is the first fruit set on the 1807 after 9 days I think.

Here is a nice green fruit a couple days old on the 1531 Haist x 915* Haist seed I made last winter. I sibbed it. About 50% of those I have tried so far have produced green which is what would be expected for a (pumpkin x squash)x squash cross. Both of the two I have growing in the greenhouse are green. I am planning on crossing these plants with the 1468 WR squash. But the 1468 is younger and will have no males open for awhile.

Here is the second set on the 1807. I pollinated with two males from the 1647.

I am still shooting 100% on fruit abortions. I have two wacky theories as to why nothing is setting this year while most set last winter. The first is lack of light. I started a couple months early this year and Nov and Dec are the cloudiest months of the year and ours were very cloudy this year. The second is that last year I only had either pure squash or squash crosses. This year so far it's only been pumpkins. Maybe there is some difference between them as far as setting in low light greenhouse conditions. Since I will be setting fruit on some squash in the next couple weeks I can test the second theory. I guess it's all just a learning experience. But as a backup I am researching a cool plant called Stevia. I might just end up killing all the plants and planting some Stevia. LOL

1807#1 is at 35" 17 DAP. It is still growing has a chance of making it. Should know in the next week.

Friday, January 13 View Page
There may be some hope yet. The 1807#1 grew from 35" to 37 3/4" in the last two days. That's the largest fruit so far this season and it is still growing. It's been sunny for most of the last week so that may be helping. The next few days will be cloudy so we will see if it continues to grow. Encouraging news anyway. :) Here is a pic.

Here is the other 162 plant. It is growing nicely as well. The foreground includes other vines from the squash plant next to it. I didn't have time to straighten it out this morning.

Tuesday, January 17 View Page
The 1807#1 is at 42 1/2" at 24DAP. Growing slowly but at least it's growing. Also pollinated the first squash on the 1468 Jarvis. It was pollinated with two males from the 1531 offspring squash plant. The female that was going to open on the 1037 Jarvis squash shriveled up and died before opening.

I forgot to bring my measuring tape this morning so I couldn't measure the 1807 fruit. Can't tell by sight if it is still growing or not. Here is a pic.

It has been brought to my attention that I have been shortchanging Joel's squash in my previous posts. It weighed 1486 and not 1468. Sorry Joel. :) Here is a picture of the first set on the 1486. A nice green.

The 1807 fruit is still growing. It's at 45 1/4" at 27DAP. Sprayed some Eagle fungicide a couple days ago and it has seemed to slow the PM nicely.

Wednesday, January 25 View Page
The 1807 has stopped growing at 47 1/2". Today is 33 DAP. The fruit is probably not old enough to have viable seeds, but I will leave it for awhile just in case. There is no sign of soft spots yet. Here is a pic I took this morning.

Here is the fruit on the 1531 offspring that I pollinated with the 1486*. It's a nice green and has a good shape. It is at 21" as of this morning at 13DAP. I really hope this one makes it. I love the cross.

Wednesday, January 25 View Page
Here is the fruit on the 1486*. So far so good. It is in the shade so the green color does not come out real well.

Just for the heck of it I pollinated one on a side vine of the 1486*.

Wednesday, January 25 View Page
Here is the 1810 plant. The main vine went straight up in the air and cracked off. Two side vines have taken over for the main.

I think the 1807 may be growing again. It measured 49" this morning. I have never seen a fruit stop and then start growing again. I am measuring in the same spot so I don't think it is measurement error. Very strange. The squash are at 26 1/2 at 14 DAP and 19 1/2 at 10 days. PM is under control and the plants all look good.

Plants are all looking good. The 1807 is creeping along, it's 51 3/4" at 41DAP. If it can make it another week or so I think there will be viable seeds. Both squash fruit are growing nicely. Mine is 40 1/2" at 21DAP and the 1486 is 38" at 17DAP. The 162J field pumpkin is growing rapidly. It looks like a large zucchini now. I will start measuring it next time. Not sure if the 1810 x 1807 has taken.

1807 is 51 3/4 at 44DAP and still growing. My squash is 43 1/4 at 24DAP. The 1486 is also 43 1/4 at 20DAP and growing like crazy. Here is a pic of the 1807.

Ooops, the 1807 is at 52 3/4 not 51 3/4. It grew an inch the last 3 days. Slowly but surely. I am losing two of my tables so I have to cut it Feb 14th. It will be 52 days old then.

1807 up another inch to 53 3/4" at 47DAP. My squash is at 46" 27DAP and the 1486 is 46 1/4" at 23DAP. The FP is at 47" and growing very fast. I had to move the whole plant to a different table and a lot of leaves broke. Hopefully it still keeps growing. It is so different looking than the AG's. I am getting really fond of it.

I started seeds from the 162J and 162B as well as 3 seeds from the Razo 150.5 FP Friday night. All had germinated by this morning. I also will be trying giant marrow for the first time. I planted 3 seeds from Dutch Brad's 70.5 and two seeds from his 135 Saturday night. Both were from his WR 206 pounder. All three 70.5's have germinated but not the 135's yet. It's only been 34 hours though, so it's still early.

Here is the 145 Crews field pumpkin in the greenhouse. It grew very fast and has a nice high blocky shape to it. I think it is going to do real well this year.

This one is from the 150.5 Razo. I pollinated it with the 135 Wursten marrow. It will be fun to see what shapes come from the seeds.

Here are my field pumpkins and marrows. Two rows of 6 plants for a total of 12. I have 6 giant tomato plants in the middle as well. I hoed around each plant and sprayed the rest of the weeds with Round-up. They should be dead soon.

We are bone dry here. No rain in about a month and none in the forecast. Temps are supposed to be close to 100 by Thursday. Ouch.

The heat has been brutal here. 90+ every day with a possibility of 100 in the next couple days. We also set a record for lack of rain in June. .2 inches for the month. I pulled all my AG's to concentrate on the FP and tomatoes. The FP are not enjoying the hot dry weather much either, they are getting burned vine tips. The plants themselves look fairly decent considering the weather. I have had to water pretty much every day. Nothing has set yet because of the heat, but I wasn't planning on pollinating till mid-July anyway. Just for the heck of it I pollinated 4 marrows this morning and covered with small chairs to shade them. A couple of pics to follow.

Here is the FP and Marrow patch with Tomatoes in the middle. The Roundup worked wonders on the weeds.

I am real impressed with the FP x marrow cross growing in the competition patch. It is setting fruit like crazy and they have great shape. There must be some hybrid vigor going on. None of the other FP's are doing very well. I cut three fruit off yesterday and still have three more to choose from. Here is a pic of the best looking one I left on.

The FP x marrow plant with all the fruit on it has died. The leaves all turned yellow and the fruit stopped growing. One of the FP x marrow plants in the breeding patch has a nice fruit on it. I haven't taken care of the plant at all and don't expect much from it. Here is a picture of the fruit.

Found some cool cloning gel cups at my local Jungs garden center. You are supposed to poke a hole in the tinfoil lid and then put your cutting in. Of course I didn't read the directions and pealed the lid off before putting the cutting in. lol Here is a picture of some cantaloupe cutting I put in the cups.

And a close-up of one. I put some paper towel on top hoping to keep the moisture in. I'm going to buy some more and keep the lid on this time.

The heat has caused a lot of my fruit to mature early. Here is a picture of a bunch I harvested yesterday. The marrows are all from the 66 Baggs. The FP on the left is from the my 57, and the other two are from the 145 Crews. There won't be anything big this year. I still have four cantaloupe plants left to play with though.
