I found some old pics of my first shot at giant pumpkins. One of the chickens pecked at it, so we thought it would have been disqualified. In hindsight, it would have been okay. I probably missed an opportunity to jump into the hobby 10 years earlier than I did by not taking it to a contest to meet some other growers. This picture is from 1988, and I am guessing the pumpkin was in the 2-300 pound range.

Well, there goes another hundred pounds. More deer damage in two days than in the previous 15+ years combined.

This was supposed to be the good set on the 794 Wolf plant, but the shape just wasn't getting any better. Going to now keep 2 or 3 on the plant for pretty ones and hope they aren't all lopsided like this.

1969 Haist - aborted after day 10 or so. Males are empty inside. Likely sterile plant, and I'm probably looking at pulling it within a week.

This is my 1417. Once thought to be my best shot for the year, I can already tell where it's going to split on me in about 3 weeks or so.

Had to pull the 1969, it just wasn't going to set fruit.
This is a pic of the 811 Gerhardt. A little longer than I was hoping for, but it will have the color when it grows up.

This was a tough one. Lost the 1916, pulling the plant. Not sure if was a blossom end infection, or something more serious. It would have been a great looking pumpkin.

While I was out today, the deer did more pruning on one of the few remaining plants that I had a little hope for.

This is a new one - woodchuck hole under a pumpkin. He went in a few feet, and then gave up apparently. Looks like mill fabric saved this pumpkin. Still haven't seen the woodchuck.

So we were *this close* to making a last minute run to the Ohio State Fair, and at least cashing in on a Howard Dill award. That is, until I looked on the bottom of the pumpkin and noticed the gaping hole.

536 Wolf 2015 EST (811 Gerhardt x 359 Foss). It's going to sit in the corner a while and think about how it misbehaved.

My 359 Foss is gorgeous, but growth has petered out. I should have checked the stump more often, this one puked out for a while before I caught it.

Lost another one - stem split. 913.5 Wolf 15 (1561 Reeb x self). about 50# over chart. It had some pretty ripe soup in it when opened, so no seeds were saved.

On a positive note, Timmy grew the 575 and got quite the looker. Unfortunately, the weeds won the battle of his attention span this summer.

1071 Wolf 15 DMG (665 Wolf x 359 Foss) 50 pounds light to chart like I figured. Losing this one was a first - it appears that some mouse damage became infected and spread. It was in a spot I wasn't really watching. Lesson learned. This was my largest by measurements this year.

756 Wolf 2015 (665 Wolf x 811 Gerhardt) This was on a secondary vine, same plant as the 1071. This was pretty much a twin to the bigger one, both pretty, both light.

1038 Wolf (1417 Wolf x 1561 Reeb) Quite heavy to the chart, and I was wrong about this one being doomed (July 14th entry) but it lost out on some potential due to deer.
