Its been a tough couple of weeks down here in my patch. Basically 2 weeks of overcast drizzly weather thats making mildew the only thing growing well. I have 2 pumpkins growing on secondaries on my early plants due to man made disaters on the fruit on the mains. The biggest at this stage has a 75" circ on day 21 on the 1119 McMullen it made 23 lbs today (th first full day of sunshine). The other is on a self sown plant which is makin 60 circ on day 18. My last hopes for a big one are on the 1062 stelts, this pic is of one pollinated 6 days ago and there is also another one that I pollinated yesterday both on the main. Fingers crossed for these babies.

You know its been a tough year when the kids unattended vine and a self seeded pumpkin from a leftover last season are going to fight it out for the biggest in the patch. El ninos hit hard in my patch. Run out of water, hottest January in history. Time to get back to the drawing board for next year.

Planted today the first two of three competition plants. Has been anxious wait holding off to plant but history has shown the lead up to christmas is not good for pumpkin growth and so this year have purposely delayed plant starting. The weighoff I am aiming for is not until mid April so technically believe I may be timing it well as my traditional November plant is well and truly over by late March. First two in the patch are two 2010 offspring the Beachy 441.5 (1725 Harp selfed)and Welty 164 (1421stelts x 259.5 Welty) Waiting to see what goes into my last spot. Heres to a great season. Clinton

Sorry about the pic, its from my phone while it was raining. This is the 441,5 Beachy (1725 selfed) three days into the ground. I hope cotyledon growth represents fruit growth later on.

Here is my first baby for the season. This is off a test plant that now I decided to keep. It is a selfed fruit off my own cross (1062 steltsX1119 McMullen). I sent many of these plants around my district to a heap of new growers and they are having plenty of fun.

Day 14. wont measure until tommorrow. This is the second sunny day since the pumpkin was set. Just google Queensland floods if you are interested in seeing what has been happening this part of the world. Rain gorged some washouts along the secondaries and exposed the excellent root growth at some nodes. Quickly covered up and hopefully back in business.

Day 15 first and last measurment for the year on the Mcgrath 440Est (1062X1119). 34 " circumference. Will do the OTT next year when I find my tape. Definetly has grown in the last 24 hours. Days start off windy but then turn into excellent growing days. Happy new year to all.
