This year is my first time to seriously grow a giant pumpkin! I have in the past and it got to about 250lbs.. But I would really like to shoot for a bigger pumpkin this year... I have been reading up and would like to know what I could add to the soil this winter to the garden... We just a foot of snow but I would love to start adding anyways...

Take care, be patient, compost the manure during winter time and add it in spring, when the soil is nice to work with. Just my experience........Don

they say that snow is poor man's fertilizer. it adds slight amount of nitrogine to the soil. so let it snow

Ya but with that snow is salt from the roads which can end up in the garden. Can that do harm?

Snappy, The first thing you should do when you can work the soil is have your ground tested. This will give you an idea on ph level etc.

Thanks for all the comments.... I have 4 pumpkin plants that are in fair shape... I have just added 200 lbs of bovine composted manure and compost of my own...I presently got a portion of the patch covered in black plastic... and a thick 4 inches of compost over the rest to keep weeds down.. I also heard the the pumpkin vine that kelp meal is good too so I added that in early this spring... Lets see what happens.
