I am trying to grow really big pumpkins 300-400 lbs., but I don't know what all I should do. I have some really good seeds, but after that I am lost.

I agree. Soil first is the best guideline you can have, then combine with good seeds, some very good weather, lots of luck, a little tlc when required, topped up with plenty of food etc,. a basic knowledge, and you are on your way. Good to have another grower in the system, I,ve been growing pumpkins for 16 years now and only got to 724 lbs, but hope springs eternal, and, as 2009 is my last year at them , maybe I,ll have the combination of all the above in place --- finally.

I am by no means an expert but, I have learned alot on this site. But, what I have learned is first get a soil test, add amendements after test, start seeds inside in a 4 or 5 inch peat pot, use a hoop house if planting outside before last frost, spray or dust plants to kill pests & disease, shade pumpkin and pray alot lol. Also, How to Grow World Class Pumpkins 2 and Dicks Tips 2 are great books to get you started.

This will be your year Eddie, I'd love to get a 724 out of my little patch. Kat, there is a gal that just started last year from Conneticut that grew a 245 Lber starting out with basically a generic AG seed in almost straight horse manure. I'm guessing she did alot of research as the season went on.

How do you weigh your pumpkins??? I don't have a scale that goes higher than a couple hundred pounds.
I didn't know about the soil test before i planted...what now? This is my first year attempting this fun adventure. I think I already made a HUGE mistake!! I transplanted my pumpkin and it looks very sad! It was the only giant pumpkin seed that came up too!

Bring it to GPC weigh-off or to a local ag fair.

Look on the left side for the weighoff locator.
