This leaf dying thing doesnt help find the gourds though lol. Right in plain view. If it was a snake it would have bit you?

The gourds are trying to hide from animals. Currently they are trying to resist the fusarium and hide their fruit. They have a different seed dispersal hope, which doesn't involve poor sighted birds? The fact that the are very hard and round/rolly with water resistant seeds may hint at some other possible seed dispersal mechanisms.

Fruit protection, followed by seed dispersal.

This is everything, if you're a plant.

And even though we humans dont have such severe evolutionary restrictions as plants, we can probably see some parallels to this in ourselves.
