It is common here to see power crews rushing on the interstate highway after major natural disasters. On my way to the farm yesterday, I was passed by three caravans of power company trucks and crews rushing to Louisiana and Texas to help those out of power. All were from out of state. It brightens your day when you see something like that. The most impressive part though was seeing a fleet of power trucks from Melville, New York lined up outside a barbecue place at Hope where a crew had stopped for lunch. That is one long ride from Long Island especially in work trucks. Lots can get done successfully when people from nationwide sources all work together. Thanks guys.

When I went to Louisiana to inspect cleanup after Katrina, I left after southern Iowa and Northern Missouri got hit by a terrible ice storm. On the drive I met hundreds of semis headed north with new power poles. It is great to see how the power companies share the work when disaster hits.

We did get some out of state power help in Iowa after the derecho. It might have helped if our Governor had taken it seriously. We got hit on Monday and didn't get any National Guard help until Thursday. Not that our Guard was slow; we had guard members showing up at their armories on Monday evening, waiting for the orders. A little more press coverage would have been nice. Cedar Rapids got hit by the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane, and our infrastructure is not built to take that. It only lasted an hour (long for a derecho) but we only got 2 hours warning. Everyone except those with too much structural damage finally have power. It took 11 days for some, just because of the magnitude of the problem.

That is a long trip. We had lots of crews come from Illinois to help clean up after Isaias.
