Gas prices are 1.95, toilet paper shortages, hand sanitizer shortages, as well as bottled water shortages. Kids being sent home from schools with questioners asking if they have internet access and a computer at home. People working from home where available. I seen the first person wearing a mask. Local economy's still seems busy on the highways and few business's that I pass while on the roads. This is my busy season at work and things seem hectic as usual but under a state of emergency. The virus is all the buzz at work.

Librarys are closed down tomorrow. Plenty of tp on the shelves I guess we are too poor to panic buy down here. Intererting how excess wealth creates poverty? Here in my area it would break most people's budget to 'empty' a store shelf....

I am in high school and there was lots of talk about the virus today. If just one person in my district gets it we are moving to online school. We just had a dance cancelled and they are worried about having to cancel prom and graduation based on what happens the next few months. Many colleges around Minnesota and surrounding states that have closed campus including NDSU where I will be attending next year. But I guess the plus is I got gas for 1.99 and was able to fill my tank for under $40.

Same insanity here. Gas runs from 1.79 to 2.14. I was in an Aldi's in Cedar Rapids yesterday and I have never seen it that busy. Walmart in Anamosa was totally out of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, most cleaning supplies. My wife is a RN in a nursing home in Johnson County, about 15 miles north of Iowa City where 13 of Iowa's 14 cases are located (all got it on a cruise in Egypt). Families are staying away and calling their family members in the home just to be safe. They are having trouble getting tissues and hand sanitizer for the home. Colleges are extending spring break by 2 weeks, doing most classes by computer. Student nurses at University of Iowa can do class work but not clinical work. Some working at the home who were set to graduate with RN degree in August will now be delayed until December. Just adding to nursing shortage. All this madness is making it worse for the elderly people who are most at risk. Iowa was set to win the national wrestling title, but that is cancelled. Division III wrestling tournament is Cedar Rapids is cancelled. People have just gone totally nuts.

I was pleasantly surprised at my recent visit to the grocery store. Only the cheaper TP was sold out with plenty of Charmin waiting for me, yay! I thought the hoarders would have wiped that place out, but I guess not, lol!

Only a few items overall were sold out, and it appeared that many people were staying home. Not many vehicles on the road or in parking lots, and many of those were delivery vehicles and work trucks. I'm glad that many people here are taking the warnings to stay home seriously, since the virus is circulating in the community now.

Stay safe, everyone!

The U extended spring break a week and then is transitioning to all remote learning. No business related travel through April at the least. We're getting lots of gentle reminders to spool things down in case of a more longer-term shutdown. A parent in our district had an exposure to someone that had the virus so they shut down for the day; I'm not sure how much longer it'll be than that. No evidence of community transmission in MN yet, so who's to say how it'll be when the virus is truly here.

My wife works as a Radiology Tech at a medical center in a large university town in our area (with lots of international students). They are being told that if during a shift they are exposed to a COVID-19 patient they will be subject to a forced quarantine at the hospital. Can they even do that?

I hope that doesn't happen because it would suck to not have her at home for a few weeks!

Today was the last in-person class day at my university. We're now starting spring break a week early. When we start up on March 30 we'll be doing all classes online. So I've had to learn to use a few new bits of software and my department has ordered gamer-headsets for us to use talking to students through online-conferencing because computers' built-in mics aren't good enough. No news about how long it'll last. I'm guessing it'll be the rest of the semester.

Pumpkinman Dan: https://wiki.idph.iowa.gov/Portals/3/userfiles/6/Laws%20and%20Quarantine/5%20Facts%20about%20Quarantine%20and%20Isolation.pdf

Direct from the Iowa Department of Public Health. It takes an order from the department or local board of health to legally require a quarantine. Of course, an employer could tell you that you either go into quarantine or lose your job. But if the hospital did that, she could probably make a good claim for pay for the entire time quarantined, including overtime. Stuff like this is why nurses and other medical employees need to be unionized.

It would be more reasonable for the hospital to say that those exposed are medically disabled and eligible for short term disability plans like Aflac. I am glad that my wife took the disability plan at the nursing home where she works. She is in a higher risk group for covid, so if it gets into the nursing home, I want her home, out of there and cashing in on her Aflac.

I was thinking about the casinos here yesterday. Are people allowed to gather and gamble? In Michigan they've banned groups larger then 250 people. The number of active cases here has gone from 13 to 25 over night. With everyone working from home and no school, I have to believe that the U.S. IS about to become the next hot spot for the virus. Sorry to hear about the show being cancelled. Mark, I wish your wife the best.

Reading stories of police being called to stores to control crowds. They've said on the local new to expect internet speed to slow down to a crawl due to everyone working from home and or everyone that is staying home are streaming movies.

Our governor called up the National Guard over 17 sick people, and 14 of them were all from Iowa City and on the same cruise in Egypt. I guess she wants to jump on the Chicken Little panic train. Schools all over extending spring break, but Iowa City/Johnson County board of health says there is no need to close schools. Shortages include paper products, hand, dish and laundry soap,Tylenol, ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamins, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, canned fruit and vegetables. No shortage of guns or ammo, lots of stuff on sale. I bought a.22 rifle and brick of ammo today to pick off critters that attack the garden, and rabbit/squirrel hunting in the fall. The nursing home where my wife works has cut off visitors. She heard one chain store is in trouble for raising TP prices by 300%. She also heard people are buying up all the baby formula and demanding high prices for it. Nothing like shameless profiteering, taking food from babies. All you hear on radio is the virus and hand washing instructions. The world is nuts.

I think the people around here finally realized the potential impact of the virus over the last week. Grocery stores last week had very full parking lots. I went yesterday to my local small grocery store. Usually there are only about 10 shoppers there at a time. It was the busiest I have ever seen it. I noticed that toilet paper, hamburger, eggs and cleaning supplies were completely sold out. Other shelves were nearly empty, such as canned soup and spaghetti sauce. I have always had a good supply of food in storage so no need for me to panic.

My daughter has been watching, waiting for Minnesota schools to close. Finally yesterday, they decided that the schools that were on spring break last week would have Monday and Tuesday off also. Her reaction...what difference is 2 days going to make?

Illinois cancelled all school until March 30 starting Tuesday. Evperyones health is primary concern but puts me in a real bind with a greenhouse full of plug flats that need transplanted. 6 cases in Winnipeg, Manitoba as of now (was at 0 three days ago). High schools will still be open next week, but will be closed from March 23 to at least April 13th (3 weeks). The City of Winnipeg has closed all public libraries and pools until further notice.

Being a grade 12 student attending a school with almost 1300 students, it will be very interesting going to school tomorrow. I expect a lot of students won't be there. Already, all after and before school activities are cancelled - including all high school sport games and practices. As well, our Spring pep rally has been cancelled and so have all other large school gatherings.

19 million sick, 180,000 hospitalized, 10,000 dead. OOPS! That was influenza data from Feb 5, 2020. 39 days ago. Nobody gets upset about that. Just think if that was corona virus. I have a good reason for being skeptical about anything the government says about disease issues. Dose anyone remember the Gulf War Syndrome? Soldiers came back sick from Iraq War I. They passed it on to family members. Both the Bush the First and Slick Willy administrations said there was nothing to it, it was all a fake. Well, my wife took care of a new mom and baby in the hospital after that war. The father had come back sick (pneumonia) and had passed it on to the mom. My wife came down with it, diagnosed as a mycoplsma type infection that took months and several antibiotics to clear up. It left her with asthma. My brother in law was a National Guard medic and got called up for Iraq War II. He said their worst cases were that pneumonia. Some didn't make it to the hospital in Germany. He came home with asthma from it. But the government still has not admitted that it was real.

So the government covered up that plague that they brought into the country. Both parties involved because they valued money over American lives. Taking responsibility would be too expensive.

Now I need to see the doctor for a problem totally unrelated to COVID19, but I don't know if I can. Supposedly, my wife was exposed briefly to one of our newest confirmed cases yesterday. The doc's office needs to check it out to see if I can be seen. But there have been millions of cases of flu, over 10,000 dead and that is not a concern.

I will say again, the world is being run by freaking idiots.

The system was built around your typical seasonal flu and can accommodate those cases. Let's say highly pathogenic avian flu emerges or one of the seasonal viruses becomes more virulent like the virus from 1918. We'd see the exact same thing happening as we're seeing now with SARS-2. Our healthcare system is already rationing care to people and has limited capacity to treat a sudden influx of critically ill people.

Well, after 8 hours of worry, we found out that my wife's corona scare was a false alarm. We found out that that the co-worker tested negative. Wish they had told her that when they called this morning, but she was not allowed to let me know until her shift was over. I got to see the doctor for my stomach issue.

Hopefully things will calm down, but go into the stores and it is nuts. Kids that aren't in school are running wild while mom fills the cart with food. A little old lady at Aldi's ran into both me and my daughter with her cart. At least we found diaper for another of my wife's co-workers, but no baby wipes. Gas prices are crazy. Some is as high as $2.12 but we paid $1.59. One guy had 6 big gas cans to fill. I saw one station selling E-85 for $1.45.

The panic just keeps getting whipped up. Iowa Governor Fuehrer Reynolds just slapped more restrictions on the state. Churches are even shut down to more than 10 people. So if someone dies from corona, no funeral. I thought the First amendment said the government can't prohibit the exercise of religion, or the right to assemble and petition for redress of grievances. Do either now and she will send the police after you. Just call Iowa the Hawkeye gulag. Ammo is getting scarce. One online dealer is sold out of most 9 mm, another has almost quadrupled prices. People are getting scared of what new form of tyranny will come along once the number of sick people hits 30.(1/1000 of 1% of the population)

I guess it turned out to be no "democrat hoax" this time! Thank god for the "dependable" and "trustworthy" leadership we have in this country. LOL!

He claimed to have the virus under "control," that the number of US cases would go "down, not up," that the virus might "disappear" through a "miracle" or something of the sort, that the virus might well vanish by April with the warmer weather, that the media and Democrats were over hyping the situation. What an appalling lack of leadership and understanding of the severity of this outbreak.

Thank god the stock market got his attention and made him do a 180 or he'd still be down playing and spinning this in to something fake and over hyped. Now lets all wait to see himself complementing himself patting himself on the shoulder for his far to late reaction and ignorance.
By the end of this he will surely be claiming that he single-handedly beat the virus and the was the first to act.

Turns out that without the stock market there's not much to celebrate about his leadership.

Stay healthy folks!

Now I am not insensitive to the mortal peril we all are in. After all, based on age and health concerns, I am definitely in the high risk category.

What gets under my hide is the fact that this plague is minor compared to other health issues like pneumonia and influenza. And people have been so easily worked up into full blown panic. We have gotten soft. Unable to face down a problem and tackle it with common sense. And politicians are taking advantage of that softness, seeing just how far they can go in seizing power. Just wait until the next "Super Flu" hits. Bye bye liberty. Hello to dictatorship. They know what they can get away with now, and they will be prepared with the iron boots to crush the people. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order putting temporary restrictions on nonessential medical and dental procedures that must go into effect no later than March 21, 2020 at 5 p.m.

She also signed another executive order temporarily suspending evictions.

549 confirmed cases of the virus and I believe 3 deaths. stores are cutting house to "clean" & "stock". Many allowing first hour stores are open are reserved for the elderly & physically challenged.

Distilleries are now making hand sanitizers and donating to the public.

No offense hobbit, the ventilators they are always talking about push air in to your lungs and pull air out as well, so not exactly the same.

Some will need ventilators, some just oxygen. Most will not need much breathing assistance at all. There is encouraging evidence that a malaria drug could cure the virus. Here in Iowa, all schools are temporarily shut down. All our universities have switched to online classes. And today we learned about the first university student to test positive. Cedar Rapids is running buses for free, but limit buses to half capacity.

My mother has delayed her 2nd knee replacement that was scheduled for after Easter. Since she is 91 years old, I don't want her anywhere near a hospital if we can help it.

Only 45 confirmed cases from over 800 tests (around 5% positive) One county has over half the cases, and half of them got it on cruise in Egypt. Only a couple have been hospitalized. Some more are being watched. The state is giving out warnings about where confirmed cases have been and requesting self isolation. So hopefully we are way ahead of other parts of the country.

Luigi. look up the stats I'm posting. Are they correct or are they false as you claim? You can find those executive orders on the states website. I'll provide you with a couple of links to ease your struggle. I started this topic to compare my area to others and see what's being done. It's of my opinion that you are out of line and trying to hijack my post. I'm unsure why you would come into a non pumpkin growing area of this web site to pound on your chest claiming great state victories showcased in St. Johns. Are you seeking attention? I refuse to give it to you.

A friend of mine is an ICU nurse in Virginia and says they have 10 COVID-19 positive patients on ventilators and “their chest x-rays are the worst I’ve ever seen”.

Another problem for those that survive the pneumonia infection is that their lungs can be damaged for life making them more susceptible to infections down the road.

Spudder, that is a good observation. My wife contracted
gulf war syndrome, taking care of a new mother in the hospital who got it from her husband who brought it back from Iraq War I. A mycoplasma pneumonia that took several antibiotics and months to knock out. Left her with asthma. And she picks up bugs easily. She is working in a nursing home now, so it is important for her to be on the job. So I often drive her to work, pick her up in the afternoon, and do all of the errands and cooking. Her doctor does not want her working if the covid gets into the nursing home.

The weather is toying with me. Sunshine - Rain - Sunshine - Rain - Sunshine - rain.... We have a half finished retaining wall being built - Contractor will not come back until it's completely dry - Another No show for today - which looks like Sunshine. My county is on Shelter at home so lots of time to read - prep veggie & herb seeds - I've got some veggie seeds from 1995 that I just had to put in seedling trays to see if they will grow. Planted enough for family & friends. On another note: Trapped a Racoon in the back Meadow - those tiny fingers out smarted me and got loose before my better half could dispose of it.
