Tuesday evening, retired Iowa football coach Hayden Fry passed away at the age of 90. Unless you have lived in Iowa, you probably have no idea what he meant to the state. The Iowa football team had gone through 17 consecutive losing seasons. They were the laughing stock of the Big 10. Hayden had never been to the state when he took the job. But he had a reputation for integrity and winning. He was the coach who integrated the Southwest Conference. Hayden brought in a new attitude. No longer would they be losers. He got permission from the Pittsburg Steelers to copy their uniforms (they sent him one of Terry Bradshaw's game jerseys). He designed the Tiger Hawk emblem to replace the ridiculous old hawk. Taught a bunch of unknown athletes his exotic plays. H=In just a few years they won the Big 10 and went to the Rose Bowl. He won 3 Big 10 titles and took his team to 14 bowl games, 12 more than they had been to in all the years before him. His winning attitude spread not only through the athletic program but the entire state. He put the America Needs Farmers ANF sticker on the helmets to show support for our farmers in the depths of the farm crisis. His infectious optimism spread through the state. Nobody knew that in his last year he was fighting prostate cancer, taking treatments at 4 AM so he wouldn't worry the team. After he retired he let people know and did a lot to promote cancer awareness and treatment. Doctors gave him 5 years to live, but he survived for 20 years. I have to say that a Texan who became an Iowan had a bigger positive influence on our state than anyone.

At a time when our politicians are showing us the depth of greed, hate, jealousy and many other negative qualities, it is sad to lose such a great person. But he left a legacy that I hope will live on for a long time.

Tom Brand's son is now wrestling for Iowa. The Brands still aren't as well known as Dan Gable.

Iowa was spoiled by the quality of coaches they had. At one time they had Hayden Fry in football, Dr. Tom Davis men's basketball, C. Vivian Stringer women's basketball. Duane Banks, baseball and Dan Gable wrestling.
