Here in R.I. We have only muzzleloaders. I love my CVA Wolf, 50 cal. Rifle with scope. 180 Grain sabots are used. Hits dead center at 200 yards. Lotta knockdown power.

for deer and proghorn, or any thin skinned animal my choices are ( and i use them both) is the 6mm rem, or the same rifle the kids use is the 243 rem, both the same 100 grain bullet, the gun is piont and shoot, my son has used my 6mm, on two of his first deer, the first at 320 yards, and the next deer at 280 yards, if you need to reach out and touch something this is the gun for you, you dont have the energy to knock over your game with the 100 grains, but for distance and accuracy, simply the best, i own just about every kind of gun out there, if you place the bullet where it needs to go, then any gun will do, but for the most success we have had this is the gun, there are so many great rifles out there from the 7mm, to the 7mm/08, and to the good old 30/30 that my 11 year old took his bear last fall, go with a cofidence gun and you can't miss, scott.

For blacktail deer around Pemberton I use a .260 Remington Titanium shooting 100 grain Barnes TTSX bullets. Its super light with a composite stock to take the abuse of the coastal BC mountains.
For the interior of BC where we hunt alot of Mule deer as well as sheep, moose and elk I use a my Sako .300win mag. I used to shoot 180g nosler partitions out of it but a couple years ago I switched to the 150g Barnes TTSX bullets. A 150g bullet at just under 3000 F/second flys incredibly flat for a long ways out of a 300wmag.

By far, the most fun I've had shooting is at woodchucks with a Ruger M77 stainless/composite in 22-250 and I hand load 55-grain V-Max bullets, which gets me at around 4000 FPS muzzle velocity. On top is a 4 x 12 Sightron glass. 500 yard shots ain't out of the question under the right conditions.

joe your correct about the 22-250, that round makes the 500 yarders look easy, and will drop most deer, a buddy of mine in new hampshire uses this one for all of his deer hunting, it still amazes me when he can shoot a deer running full steam through the slash and he drops it in its tracks! he also carries the contender in the same cal when he logging, saw some great shots from the skidder!

I like the .308 It has the nearly the same balistics as the 30-06 so many other hunters like. .308 (actually 7.62mm) is the prefered sniper rifle caliber, and medium machine gun caliber for the US military, so bullets and brass are relativle cheap. I wouldn't go moose or alaskan brown bear hunting with it, but it is plenty of gun for everything else.

Since were talking guns here on BP thought I would let you know the government finally got something right here in Canada. On Wednesday the Conservative's a bill passed 3rd reading that abolished the 17 year old 2 billion dollar waste called the long gun registry. They finally realized that criminals don't register their guns. It was a long fight but for once common sense prevails.

Old Rookie, how about muzzleloaders, R.I. and Mass have the toughest laws concerning fire arms. Legally I can carry anywhere in the country however in Mass I can't buy ammo or buy a gun there. The only acceptions are muzzleloaders. In fact when I go to the Bass Pro shops. I can't ask to see a weapon except the muzzleloaders.

i know kenny, its awful! when i applied for my license to carry concealed, they tattooed my butt, held one of my kids for a deposit, and then made me donate a kidney! kenny, if you like a 22, you should try the 17hmr, the ammo is pricey, but a lot of fun,the only problem i found with this gun is that you can't find the squirrel after the shot! kinda makes you go hungry!!!!!!!

Tallcorn, my dad was obsessed with Fox Squirrel hunting back in the 70's and 80's. As weird as this sounds, he used to make "monster gloves" for halloween with the tails. He made gloves with a tail on each finger. Like you, he loved the 22 cause it is cheap and simple. I couldn't tell you the make.

This is a very interesting post. So many people like guns. I don't get it but this is America and to each his own. When you guys are out in Vegas you can go to a range in town and fire anyone of number of full auto machine guns. I did an Uzi 9mm years back. Thank goodness they are illegal for use outside the range.

I think most people own a bunch of guns because they like to hunt or shoot targets. Too many they are actually toys that are very well respected and taken care of. Military and Police have there guns as tools.
To bad so many people do not know how to use the guns they do own. Accidents and crimes of passion kill thousands every year. Just last year a guy in town shot his ex-girl friends new guy. Legal gun and the only killing in this town since anyone can remember.
I have hunted with a 30-30 years ago and was 7th or 8th bar with a .22 as a kid.

orange with envy, how about mass? unlimited doe permits, you can shoot 2 at a time, check them in , then go out and do it over again!,, fish and game in this state has a done a wonderful job at controlling the herd, sad to say though there is just not enough hunters to control what fish and game has done, its tough seeing deer starve through the winter, way to many deer! and it is getting so bad that the lyme is carring over to the public at an alarming rate! we as hunters with the purchase of our licenses, buy open land for the animals to live, also the money is used for restocking programs like the wild turkey with great success. so everyone please take a kid or someone that has not been hunting out this year, the future of hunting and the animals depends on us, scott.

I'm more of a venison harvester than a deer hunter. I feel a sense of accomplishment at putting meat in the freezer to feed my family. It is also not about fair chase. If you want fair chase, go hunting with a pointy stick, not a rifle or even a multi cam, composite compound bow with LED sight pins and and a dozen digital trail cams that download to your smartphone. and don't get me started on electronics for fishing...
You should match your hunting tools to the species you are hunting to ensure a quick efficient kill, without excessive waste. shooting rabbits with a .270 would be waste, shooting moose with a .270 would not guarantee a quick kill. Just my 2 cents....

hunters need to stick together, it does not matter how you hunt or what you use to do it, just be legal, we as hunters face an uphill battle to control the future of our wildlife, with all the people out there against us hunting they out number us 4-1, and a lot of people that are against hunting do not understand that we care more about the animals than they do, we (as hunters) use our money for the purchase of wild lands for animals to live, and the anti-hunters use their money for lawers to try to stop hunting all together. if they where smart they would use their funding for the purchase of there own land to protect the animals, if animals are not controled, they over populate , get diseased and die, mother nature can be so cruel, lets keep the fighting with the anti's, scott.

Scott I'm not sure how this bill will effect border crossings with firearms. I think it's gonna be a wait and see type of thing.
Kenny your right some people shouldn't have guns, but let me tell you from first hand experience...stringent gun laws and rigid licensing does absolutely nothing in keeping firearms out of those peoples hands. The people who shouldn't have guns generally have no respect for the laws that govern your country and they break those laws on a regular basis, what does it matter to them to break one more.
Talk of firearms laws by politicians is nothing more than political posturing to the masses who believe a gun law will save their life and to buy those same peoples votes, nothing more. Honestly which is more probable to save your life, a firearm or firearm law??

Yep there shouldn't be any speed limits on our highways. Registering a car and requiring a person to have a valid driver licenses is a bridge too far! Bad folk are just gonna break the law anyhow. Too bad if a few hundred thousand innocent people are slaughtered along the way. Tis Tis! What a lame excuse for not having some sort of reasonable gun control laws. A major cop out!

Scott, owning a vehicle is not protected under the constitution, gun ownership is. There are laws regulating unlawfull discharge and even brandishing firearms to compare with your speed limit analogy. Cars kill more people than guns every year, so where is the waiting period to purchase a car? or bans on cars of higher Horse Power? scarily that last one may be coming sooner than we think.

your so right spudley! just like ben said, more innocent people are killed by cars than guns every year! people should focus on getting some kind of license or something to drive a car properly? most states have great gun laws, background checks ect.. but its the same with a car, no one can prevent you or someone else getting into a loaded car drunk , or not, and killing an innocent family! on that note lets talk ratio,, the kill ratio on homicide in the u.s. (guns) vs. cars, homicides avg, 15,000 per year, cars 42,000! avg. people kill!!! not guns or cars. "if i could not own a gun, i probably would be a very good knife thrower"!!lol, scott

With all due respect Ben and I really mean that. You seem to be able to at least talk about gun control without getting your panties all in a bunch, I appreciate that. The constitution has been amended 28 times, why because it ain't a perfect document. At one time you could own another person. Women and certain minorities couldn't vote. So let's at least have a civil conversation about the subject. One place to start imho would be to reinstate the assault rifle ban.

I never really understood the "assault" rifle ban. Functionally, "assault" rifles are no different than any other semi-automatic weapon. Appearance seems to be the motivating factor in legislation designed to restrict them. Too many people equate "assault" rifles with fully-automatic weapons, which already enjoy very stringent regulation.

I don't like the assault rifle ban. What makes it an assault rifle? is it how it looks? is it the magazine capacity? is it having a selector lever? I actually would like a "black rifle" in .308 caliber so my children could learn to hunt with a rifle that has an adjustable stock. should all rifles with composite adjustable stocks be banned? but wood stocked AK's would be fine? I just participated in military exchange program with Norway (lots of fun with Akevit). Norway allows silencers on hunting rifles to prevent disrupting wildlife. Norway also remembers the occupation during WWII, and sees an armed populace as a deterant to future invasion by anyone. Why does America ban silenced firearms? why do some want to ban all firearms in America. I've served in the US military in the former Yugoslavia. Under every haystack and every woodshed and barn was a weapons cache, either mines, explosives or rifles and ammunition. You would not believe the sheer volume of explosives in those countries. That was part of their defense plan, to be too tough and too dangerous to invade. It turns out they fell apart from within, and turned the weapons against each other, but they were never successfully invaded. ;-)

Scott,
I still await your plan for reasonable gun control. No panty's knotting here, I just want to hear what you believe you can implement that will keep the masses safe from guns and gun owners? I am also hoping how my post can be explained as a "cop out"??
I have always thought a "cop out" was trying to talk about one issue by comparing it to another to try and get your point across without really adding anything informative to the actual conversation. But that's just me...what the hell do I know.

ben ,we have a m-2, 30 carbine, fully auto, with lever for single. the kids use this gun out to 100 yards, a great learning tool, but not on full auto, the ammo is to expensive, and i'm down to 2 spam cans, 600rounds each can, but with the old ammo, the primers are hard, and dont always go off, not good. and its very tuff to find hunting ammo for it, the fmj goes right through everything!lol. that military exchange with norway sounds great!

Tabacco kills more people then guns, alchahol kills more people then guns.. Camcer kills more people then guns. At least a gun has a safty switch on it. I own assault rifles and i'm a legal gun owner. I pay my taxes and served my country. I earned the right to have a gun by our founding fathers. Liberals are such babies.
