So with over 4 months until we sow the pumpkins I’ve decided to take up an old hobby of mine, growing giant onions. I was growing them over ten years ago for a few years and was just getting the hang of it when they were all vandalised and pulled up, I gave up and just grew the pumpkins with Stuart. My target then was to get one to over 10lb and I think I got around the 8lbmark. My target now is over 12lb and I’m under no illusions of how much dedication it will take. I’m certainly off to a good start because I looked up Keith Foster to buy some of his onion seeds and Growing Manual. (Yep Growing Manual, he’s just like us with no secrets, just wants to help other growers enjoy the sport.) Anyway we had a great chat and the next day phoned me to say that he was going to send me some of his top seed from a 13lb 7oz onion with great shape and potential for this year. This all means that while all you pumpkin nuts (in the Northern Hemisphere Go Ben from OZ) are sat on your butts going thru the seed bank, I will be enjoying a little bit of gardening therapy.
