Disaster...again!!!! The Stidwill main was shooting straight up and curled backwards, starting to grow back towards the stump. With gentle coaxing, I was able to get it pointed in the right direction. All was well until I was burying secondaries and heard an audible, but very soft "cccccrrrrack". A minimal transverse hairline crack had appeared, just a few millimeters long. I carefully took any strain I could off the vine, but this morning, this was the end result. I can't stand it! This crack is one node down from the female I'm hoping to pollinate, so if it's a good pollination, all should be just fine. The small secondary seen in the picture will be the new main, but I've lost a couple of weeks on pumpkin production. I think my best bet is to stay out of the garden as much as possible. The Jutras is the only plant left that hasn't been damaged or mutated, so I'm staying away. Last year it was hail, bugs and ribbon vines...this year it's me!
