In April, I started my first round of seeds, and I made a number of mistakes. First, I used a space heater to warm the air around the pots I started the seeds in. Bad idea. The seeds spent 2 weeks in cool soil, and never germinated. They rotted and I had to discard them.
In early May, I started several new rounds of seeds, most from my friend Jean Louis Duchezeau in France. For these seeds, I filed the tip of the seed coat to expose the tip of the seed, rather than thinning the edges of the seed coat. I also germinated the seeds in plastic bags, on a folded paper towel soaked with warm seaweed solution. I warmed the seeds on a heating pad. The results were much better.
I'm planting the first 2 plants today (both 548 Duchezeau 2002), with the rest to follow next weekend (667, 486, and 433 Duchezeau, plus 287 Cramton). The 548 has been a very strong seed--always the first in each batch to germinate.
