Here's my patch guard. Not the rabbit - the legumes. Half my yard is planted in a 40% clover, 30% alfalfa, and 30% KY Bluegrass mix. It serves two purposes. First the roots help to break up the deep hardpan and the legumes fix nitrogen in the soil. Secondly, most critters aren't going to pay any attention to pumpkin plants if they have an all you can eat buffet of fresh legumes.
