And so it has begun…

With the help of you very nice pumpkin growers I have decided that I can grow a damn giant pumpkin despite the challenges I face; IE, 110+ heat, late start, soil that could be better and a grower that has only a fraction of a clue =). But hey, we all gotta start somewhere, right?

I went down to the local plant nursery and procured about 30 bags of soil, some compost, 2 bags of manure, and vermiculite, some fish stock fertilizer and some fruit trees that were on sale for 15 bucks, Sweet!

In later posts you will see the area which my 2 plants will inhabit, but for a visual my yard has a raised rear level with rock landscaping, I am going to turn a little 1/3 into my growing area… This weekend I am going to clear the rock away (my back hurts already), add all the new clean dirt, then till the whole mess up with a borrowed roto-tiller borrowed from my soon to be wife’s grandparents. Once that is done I will send my dirt off to get a soil sample so I can see what I must add to get the PH right.

And so it begins! The odds are against me, but with hard work, determination, luck, help from you all, more luck, and a shade cloth (and even more luck) I think I can get myself at least 5.5lb pumpkin! =)
