Gosh, since the day I have posted my first entry, I have been getting some really good e-mails (of which I still need to respond to) that are very encouraging and helpful. I am very thankful for them as I am a bit over whelmed with the whole aspect of growing something that needs so much pampering.
I have been collecting big carboard boxes from work, in which I will break down and cover the area of the lawn I want to turn into a pumpkin bed, and cover that with compost, dirt and mulch. I likely won't get a big pumpkin this year, but I plan on growing in this spot anyway, planting right through the cardboard.
Last year I grew my very first pumpkin ever, though it was by accident! A couple seeds must of fallen from a carved halloween pumpkin the year before in my lawn. When they sprouted in the spring, I covered the grass around them with newspaper and manure and I had 4 good pie pumpkins off this plant! It was funny because it was at the edge of my lawn and grew right into the street where I park my car normally. It was the talk of the neighbors. This is what gave me the idea of growing a big pumpkin. :)
