Over the next few weeks I thought I would try to do a calcium blanket experiment. We don’t use them at the moment but I thought it would be interesting to see if calcium is taken thro the skin of the pumpkin. I talked to our soil and plant lab and they were willing to help me out so here goes. The test will be carried out on two butternut squash just after they have been pollinated (both of these are on the same plant). I have a calcium nitrate solution at an EC of 2.45 made up and will use this to soak the towel. This is the same strength of feed we use when watering over the top of the leaves. One squash will be covered with the towel and the other won’t. I’m putting a light plastic cover over the towel to stop it drying out to fast. In a few weeks both butternuts will be picked washed and sent to the lab, where the outer skin will be removed and the flesh sampled. Here is the first photo of the butternut
