So much for spending very little time in the patch! Everyday I've been putting in a few hours, trying to get the patch to a decent level of preparation. Sometimes working at night under lights. The pumpkin growing bug has bitten me again, well when I saw how good the seedlings were doing I couldn't just let them go!
The picture show's the new fence I built with my neighbour a few weeks ago, and what I should have done 3 years ago. I've busted my butt to dig a trench, 20 inches deep, 17 foot long! The huge gumtree right next door had totally invaded the patch soil with fine roots. I severed at least 40 inch diameter roots that were leading directly into the patch. It should make a huge difference, at least with the soil staying moist! The soil is probably somewhat depleted though.
