I chopped the culls to see if they looked good internally. The split melon had 2 1/2 ovaries and the other had four. I think maybe three is normal, or maybe five or six is normal? With melons the number of ovaries should correspond directly to the final weight whereas pumpkins have hollow ovaries so there is no connection. The hull of the pumpkin is where it has weight and the hull size probably corresponds more to the sepals than the lobes/ovaries.
